Job Purpose

The Manager of Distribution Planning and Asset Management (DPAM) for National Grid New York plays a key leadership role in system planning, asset management, and operational oversight of the electric distribution network serving approximately 1.7 million customers. This position is essential to ensuring the reliability, resilience, and ongoing modernization of the distribution system, while supporting the company's clean energy objectives and regulatory requirements.

In this role, the manager will lead a team of engineers focused on the Eastern Division of Upstate New York's electric service territory. The team is responsible for evaluating asset health and reliability performance, strengthening resiliency of the system, performing system load and generation impact studies, managing capital investment portfolios, and integrating innovative technologies to optimize system performance and deliver exceptional value to customers.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead and manage the Distribution Planning and Asset Management team to deliver comprehensive planning and asset management strategies for the electric distribution and sub-transmission systems.
  • Oversee asset condition assessments and lifecycle management to optimize maintenance and capital investment decisions.
  • Uphold policies and regulations set in place for DG Interconnections per the NYSSIR by efficiently managing organizational workload in pursuit of the state EAM goals.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards (ANSI/IEEE), regulatory requirements, and internal policies related to asset ratings, thermal loading, voltage, fault duty, and protection analysis.
  • Collaborate with Transmission Planning, Operations, and other internal stakeholders to align distribution and transmission planning efforts.
  • Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes to proactively adapt planning processes and ensure compliance with evolving standards.
  • Develop and tailor the capital investment plan to mitigate the system risks of reliability, resiliency, sustainability, and affordability, having an appreciation for budgeting and project management in a resource-constrained environment.
  • Engage with external stakeholders including regulators, customers, and community groups to ensure equitable and transparent planning processes.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance asset maturity levels (AMMI) and deliver value through capital investments.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development opportunities for team members to build technical and leadership capabilities.
Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Energy Systems, or related field is required, advanced degree is preferred.
  • Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in electric distribution planning, asset management, or related utility engineering roles.
  • Strong knowledge of electric distribution systems, asset management principles, and regulatory environment in New York.
  • Experience with forecasting methodologies, DER integration, and advanced grid technologies.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of clean energy policies and environmental justice considerations.
  • Ability to manage complex capital portfolios and prioritize investments based on risk and value.
  • Takes personal responsibility for correcting problems promptly and non-defensively communicates Company engineering expectations to monitor delivery of engineering projects and satisfaction.
  • Proactively makes changes to improve performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of processes; for example, challenge existing engineering procedures and highlight areas for improvement.
  • Strong analytical, project management, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ANSI, IEEE), and asset rating methodologies.
  • Experience in change management, especially leading dynamic teams that regularly go through substantial responsibility changes
  • Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and customer service excellence.

Salary:
$161,000 - $189,000 per year
