Utilities Operations Supervisor

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Utilities Operations Supervisor to work on our Utilities and Infrastructure team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) with every Friday off.

Idaho National Laboratory needs Manager 1 leaders to drive the next wave of innovation by managing high-impact teams that advance breakthroughs in nuclear energy and advanced technologies, shaping the future of America's energy security and technological dominance as frontline leaders overseeing critical operations. You'll provide direct first-line management to professional individual contributors and skilled support individual contributors, be a guide to work groups and may become actively involved to meet schedules and resolve problems, provide direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance, and implement approved policies, budgets, and procedures. Your responsibilities include monitoring daily staff performance, reporting, and methods development, setting priorities, resolving escalated matters, checking results at frequent intervals, monitoring work, tools, and processes for accuracy and completeness against plans and standards, administering company policies affecting subordinate employees, applying advanced knowledge to effectively manage daily operations, troubleshooting and resolving problems, building productive relationships with adjacent departments, working with subordinates and functional peer groups, and interpreting policy questions to make decisions and proactively intervene to prevent or resolve problems.

This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex, which hosts the core of the U.S. nuclear research and development capabilities with a diverse array of facilities designed for remote work on highly irradiated fuels and materials. A new fuel idea can be designed, fabricated, tested, and analyzed at MFC to better understand the effects of irradiation. Many groups, such as universities, industry partners, other national laboratories, international research organizations, and other federal agencies are working at MFC. Our team works a 4x10 schedule with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• Manage a team of 10 to 15 operators that provide 24 / 7 coverage at MFC
• U&IS operates and maintains 80+ buildings across MFC, including nuclear, radiological, and non-nuclear support facilities. Key infrastructure systems include:

  • MFC-786 Substation and 13.8 KV electrical distribution network, MFC-752 Substation (repair/replacement planned), HVAC systems across multiple facilities, MFC potable and fire protection water systems, Sanitary and industrial wastewater systems, Storm drain system, MFC road network and parking infrastructure, MFC communications network infrastructure.

• Work effectively with union personnel, addressing concerns and maintaining productive relationships
• Schedule and assign tasks to ensure efficient operations and timely project completion
• Evaluate team performance, provide feedback, and address personnel issues as needed
• Ensure operators and staff are adequately trained and informed of system updates and safety procedures.
• Stay informed of local, state, and federal regulations applicable to utility systems and operations.
• Implement procedures to ensure full compliance with environmental, safety, and operational standards.
• Oversee utility-related construction, maintenance, and repair projects. Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders as necessary.

Required:

• Typically requires a degree in the field of study/practice, or combined education and experience to exceed those established for your team.
• 6-8 years' experience in lieu of education may be considered.
• Hands-on experience with utility systems, such as potable water, steam, sewer, electrical, HVAC, and piping systems.
• Ability to read and interpret facility schematics, including electrical, water, steam, piping, and HVAC diagrams.
• Proficient in Lockout/Tagout procedures to ensure safety during equipment maintenance or servicing.
• Knowledge of construction, crafts, or maintenance in an industrial setting.
• Experience working with unions and navigating union-related challenges.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The Ideal Candidate will Have the Following Experience:

• Previous experience as a foreman or supervisor, with demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams effectively.
• Water operator license (preferred), or willingness to obtain the license within 24 months.
• Proficiency in computer skills, including maintenance programs, Microsoft Word/Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Bluebeam.
• Additional certifications or training related to utility systems, like building management systems, SCADA or specialized equipment.
• Familiarity with industrial safety protocols and regulatory requirements, including OSHA standards.

Job Information:

• The target pay range for this position is $102,269 - $160,676 annually. The full pay range is $80,568 - $185,292. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

• TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
