The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst, NEJM Journal Watch, and through our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work - at home, onsite in our Boston office, or a combination of the two - based on their preferences and our business needs. Because what matters is the work we do, not where we do it.

We are seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented Data Graphics Designer who is passionate about scientific communication and visual excellence. In this role, you will contribute to the creation of clear, accurate, and compelling data visualizations for one of the world's leading medical journals. You will bring strong graphic design expertise, a deep respect for scientific integrity, and a commitment to advancing how complex medical information is communicated visually.

As part of the Editorial Creative Media (ECM) department at NEJM, you will design and produce a wide range of figures, including statistical data displays, information diagrams, and geographic maps, all aligned with the journal's rigorous style standards. You will also process medical imaging assets such as radiologic images, clinical photographs, and histologic slide images while ensuring visual consistency and accuracy. Many projects involve multi-panel figure layouts and close collaboration with medical illustrators, editors, and quality assurance teams through an iterative refinement process.

This is a fast-paced production environment where priorities can shift quickly, requiring strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without compromising quality.

Responsibilities:

  • Create figures for publication by refining and formatting author-submitted materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with the journal's rigorous style standards. This requires reading figure legends and manuscripts and being comfortable working with statistical, scientific, and medical content. Figures include data visualizations (e.g., forest plots, line graphs, bar charts, Kaplan-Meier curves, scatterplots), as well as maps, timelines, clinical trial design diagrams, and diagnostic algorithms.
  • Apply best practices in graphic and information design to produce clear, effective figures and to develop well-organized, multi-panel layouts with strong visual hierarchy.
  • Process, resize, and color-correct medical images - including patient photographs, pathology and surgical images, radiologic studies (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound), and histologic slides - to ensure consistency, accuracy, and publication quality.
  • Prioritize and manage the production of figures and graphics in a fast-paced environment with shifting deadlines, while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
  • Stay current with developments in scientific and statistical data visualization and integrate best practices into daily work and workflows.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of data and information graphics standards, templates, and processes within the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Information Design, Science, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications in data visualization, graphic design, or scientific communication are a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience creating data and information graphics for medical or scientific fields.
  • Mastery level in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel for data visualization, including the ability to generate accurate graphics from raw datasets.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Xd, Figma and HTML/CSS not required but a plus.
  • Solid understanding of statistical data displays, including bar charts, line graphs, forest plots, and Kaplan-Meier curves.
  • Mastery of best practices in data visualization and information design.
  • Ability to read and interpret scientific and medical literature to accurately translate data into visual form.
  • Basic knowledge of medical imaging formats and standards is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Proactive and solution-oriented, with the ability to incorporate feedback and adapt to evolving priorities.

Portfolio Requirement

A portfolio is required and should demonstrate:

  • Strong foundation in graphic design and visual hierarchy
  • High-quality data visualization work, including clear and accurate representation of quantitative data
  • Experience with editorial layouts, including multi-panel figures or publication-style graphics
  • Attention to detail in typography, labeling, and consistency
  • Ability to translate complex scientific or technical information into clear visuals
  • Preference will be given to candidates with examples of work in medical, scientific, or academic publishing contexts.

Compensation:

The target base pay range for this role is between $75,000 and $85,000. Salary is commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience.

Benefits:

Our generous benefits offerings include: 2 weeks of paid vacation, 6 personal days, 12 sick days, 13 paid holidays, medical and dental plans, 401(k) plans with company match, backup childcare assistance, tuition assistance and more!
