Overview

The Manager for Sterile Processing is responsible for the effective management, direction, and supervision of the Perioperative Sterile Processing department including the furnishing of sterile and non-sterile supplies, instrument/equipment and services throughout Carle's main campus and the Ambulatory Surgery Centers. Scope of services include the preprocessing/distribution, decontamination process and sterile processing to be in compliance with DNV, DHS, OSHA, AAMI and AORN standards. Manages the loaner equipment processes to ensure compliance with organizational policies. Provides support to clinical departments for equipment and instrumentation to support patient safety, infection prevention policies and department operations in alignment with the organization priorities.

As a key position in the organization, this position will plan, direct and coordinate activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly, cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients. Responsible for planning, organizing, delegating, coordinating staff utilization, budgeting, and staffing resource management. Continually develops process improvement plans to ensure efficient patient throughput and staff workflows. Is responsible for leading staff to ensure organizational goals and objectives are met through comprehensive support provided in the operating room and sterile processing. Manages and supervises functions of assigned to the department on a 24-hour basis; ensures effective delivery of clinical patient care and compliance with administrative, quality and clinical policies and procedures.


Qualifications

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days

Education:

  • Associate's Degree: Healthcare or
  • Associate's Degree: Related Field

Work Experience:

  • Team Management - 1 year
  • Sterile Processing (Preferred)

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Proven experience in providing operational oversight in a complex healthcare system.
  • Knowledge of sterilization and supply chain management principles
  • Excellent oral, written, & communication skills
  • Excellent teaching skills, flexibility and creativity in problem solving.
  • Strong data management - word processing, spreadsheets, databases and graphs to design
  • Implement improvements to meet department and organizational annual goals.
  • Requires Lean process knowledge.
  • Requires supply chain expertise to manage processes and budgetary costs to meet patient needs.
  • Leadership, independence, responsibility, accountability, and good judgment.
  • Ability to think strategically.
  • Proven experience in providing operational oversight in a complex healthcare system.

  • Ensure efficient and effective operations of sterile processing.

Responsibilities

  • Recommends or initiates personnel actions for hires, promotions, transfers, discharges, and disciplinary measures.
  • Initiates and completes staff performance evaluations.
  • Participates in budgetary planning and execution for areas of responsibility.
  • Evaluates staffing needs and appropriate patient care assignment.
  • Participates in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including staff representation of the population diversity.
  • Directs and manages personnel in assigned area.
  • Ensures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development of personnel.
  • Ensures smooth operation of all departmental functions according to approved policies
  • Ensure accordance with all state and federal law, standards of professional practice, and applicable accreditation standards.
  • Completes routine staff rounding for all shifts and provides access and visibility to staff within the department
  • Ensures SPD and Operating Room services are prepared for CMS, IDPH, and DNV Surveys.
  • Assess survey readiness.
  • Creates and implements Corrective Action Plans as needed
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of a 24 hour 7 days per week department
  • Performs introductory, annual and on-going performance appraisals for unit employees based on job description and performance standards.
  • Completes annual budget.
  • Monitors and documents budget and staffing variances
  • Provides input, submits and presents capital equipment needs.
  • Presents to the Capital Committee as needed
  • Accountable for ensuring departmental policies are clearly documented and followed
  • Ensure a safe working environment for patients, staff, and providers
  • Ensure staff are appropriately training and following national guidelines for sterilization.
  • Holds supervisors, leads, and staff accountable for completing assigned tasks and projects
  • Stays abreast of current trends, workflows, processes, and equipment
  • Works as an SPD tech as needed and/or directly patient care in the OR
  • Performs the duties of the OR Perioperative Manager, SPD supervisor, or SPD lead in their absence
  • Has direct supervision and leadership over the department staff
  • Services including any contracted or temporary employees or services
  • Develops an ongoing Employee Engagement Program, action plans to improve Engagement Scores, patient satisfaction scores, provider satisfaction scores, and Culture of Safety Survey scores

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $32.36per hour - $55.66per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
