THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections is seeking dynamic and driven Utility Plant Operators to join our physical plant team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for overseeing an inmate work crew in the performance of tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler plant equipment at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Fayette. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will oversee an inmate work crew while ensuring adherence to all applicable policies and procedures. Your responsibilities will include managing the operation of four natural gas-fired high-temperature hot water boilers and two natural gas-fired steam boilers, both in regular and emergency situations. You will use manual and automatic control systems to read various gauges and meters, perform routine maintenance, and assess operational efficiency. Additionally, you will clean and make minor repairs to equipment to ensure it functions optimally. The role also requires you to operate and maintain auxiliary equipment, test boiler water chemistry, and keep detailed logs of tests and chemical inventories. Furthermore, you will handle general housekeeping tasks and supervise inmate workers, which involves monitoring their activities, ensuring a safe working environment, and maintaining accurate records for tools and hazardous materials.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work hours are 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday, with a shift differential of $1.25 per hour.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,925 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
