Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider in ourDuke Cardiothoracic Surgerylocated inDurham, NC to provide medical and surgical carefor patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery, advanced heart failure management and mechanical support. The cardiothoracic physician assistant will perform these services under the direct supervision of the faculty physician(s) and will provide perioperative care in various medical center settings.Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients. Rotational on-call responsibilities for emergent surgical cases when assistance is required.

Job Duties & Responsibilities



  1. Provides care to patients of all ages(newborn to elderly adult).
  2. Completes history/ physical examinations, and consultations
  3. Completes admission and perioperative orders including consultations
  4. Completes data acquisition/analysis and database maintenance
  5. Coordinates/communicates patient care with nursing staff
  6. Participates in patient/family education
  7. Communicates with referring/consulting housestaff and physicians as well as outside referring physicians.
  8. Obtains data for surgical research
  9. Initiates/participates in resuscitation of patients (by ACLS standards)
  10. Participates in medical chart maintenance
  11. Participates in all aspects of follow-up care for discharged patients through clinic visits and phone calls.
  12. Evaluates pre and postoperative patients in the clinic setting
  13. Initiates orders for medications
  14. Participates in clinical trial enrollment
  15. Orders and schedules laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  16. Performs procedures such as surgical first assisting, conduit harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafting procedures, simple wound debridement, suturing and wound vac dressing management.
  17. Documents progress/interval notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepares patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.



Job Eligibility Requirements

Education



  1. Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  2. Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.



Certification



  1. RNFA certification required for NP applicants.
  2. ACLS certification required.
  3. BLS required.



License



  1. Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  2. Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.



Experience



  1. 1+ years of surgical APP experience strongly preferred.
