NC State University's Gregg Museum of Art & Design collects, interprets and exhibits exemplary hand and machine-made objects to foster learning and understanding of the cultures of North Carolina and the world. Comparable to university libraries, its collections, exhibitions and programs primarily support NC State's curricula and educational mission, while also providing a resource for the general public, as befits the university's land-grant status. The museum is a dynamic educational institution within the university, offering exhibitions, publications, classes, symposia, film screenings, lectures, tours, workshops, festivals, performances, artist residencies, and direct encounters with art and artifacts via its extensive collections.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Art Exhibit Technician at the Gregg Museum is responsible for planning, coordinating, designing, and implementing exhibition installations in the Museum's interior galleries and outdoor areas, as well as for art activations across the NC State campus. The position also serves as the main facility liaison for the building and grounds, and assists with the care of the Gregg's collection.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Art Exhibit Technician plays a key role on the Arts Management team and collaborates closely with the Museum Director to advance curatorial direction. This involves planning, designing, constructing, installing, and de-installing approximately 5-7 exhibitions per year, as well as artist-made installations or site-specific works each semester. The Art Exhibit Technician supports aspects such as space allocations, floor plans, technical drawings, color schemes, graphics, scale models, corresponding layouts, wall text and labels, and various detailed production instructions.
During the production phase, the Art Exhibit Technician determines the specific materials and equipment needed, provides the Associate Director with pricing and sourcing data for projects, and establishes construction schedules. They also integrate the proposed artworks and objects into the overall exhibit concept.
The Art Exhibit Technician regularly collaborates with the Arts Management team and the exhibitions planning team to provide technical advice on coordinating installation and de-installation schedules, contributing to task coordination, and ensuring adherence to design and construction standards. This work may include reviewing designs submitted by contracted designers, working closely with artists and guest curators, and overseeing technical support staff, student interns, temporary workers, and volunteers.
Facility Coordination 15%:
The Art Exhibit Technician undertakes other related duties to maintain and preserve the Museum's facility, grounds, woodshop, and collections storage as needed. They handle small repairs and, where appropriate, mitigate facility issues. For other needs, they submit work order tickets for necessary facility maintenance and repair, coordinate facility technician and contractor access to the spaces, and schedule facility work to coordinate with museum events and needs.
Collections Support: 15%:
The Art Exhibit Technician supports the care of the collection by handling, packaging, framing, and securely storing valuable artworks, as well as occasionally documenting the Gregg Museum's collection through photography. They also assist with upkeep of the Gregg's offsite facilities and art transportation vehicles, including 2 vans, a scissor lift and a forklift. They work with other Art Management team members on larger, short-term, collections-focused projects as needed, and they serve on the Museum's Collections Committee.
Admin/event assistance 5%:
The Art Exhibit Technician contributes to and participates in cross-departmental planning, team meetings and activities both with the Gregg Museum, Arts NC State, and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. They complete necessary training, for example, ladder safety and elevated platform use, in a timely manner and ensure the museum's safety standards and documentation are up to date. They assist with larger event setup, the movement of specialized equipment, AV equipment setup, and the construction of custom items, if needed.
