Financial Coach - Social Security Administration Benefits Counselor

Job Summary

Work one-on-one with consumers, providing services to help them set financial goals, understand their social security disability benefits (if applicable), develop skills in asset building, banking, repairing or establishing credit, managing and decreasing debt, benefits screening/access, financial and SSA work incentives counseling/planning.

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Serve as a resource to all staff members, consumers and stakeholders. Complete financial health assessments with customers. Track and meet monthly and annual program service targets.

  • Conduct individual financial coaching on topics such as credit and debt management. Assist participants to develop a personal financial plan to meet their financial goals, savings, and budgeting. Assist and empower customers to identify and assess their personal financial needs

  • Provide individual SSA (Social Security Administration) benefits counseling and planning. Assist and empower customers to understand their SSA disability benefits

  • Ensure that all customer information is documented in the database(s) on a daily basis. Set aside time each day and week to ensure that all data is current and complete. Develop and submit monthly progress reports, as directed.

  • Build relationships in the community to create opportunities for outreach and inform the community of services available.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in financial coaching training programs offered by Stand By Me.

  • Develop competency to deliver program related presentations, including but not limited to: program orientations, Mind Over Money and Social Security Benefits workshops.

  • Facilitate financial education workshops.

  • Facilitate Social Security Work Incentive education workshops

  • Maintain follow-up contact on progress toward goals during coaching sessions.

  • Refer participants to community or financial agencies to obtain services outlined in financial plans.

  • Represent the Finance Ability Program in various community forums and conduct program presentations.

  • Contribute to the Rehab department's outcomes including participation in team and staff meetings.

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • Hold and maintain CWIC: Certification required for Social Security Benefit Counseling.

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum two years of related job experience, or associate degree and minimum three years of related job experience required.

  • Experience working with adults with a wide range of disabilities required.

  • English/Spanish bilingual preferred.

  • Must pass a a credit check. Ability to pass Social Security Background check.

  • Ability to obtain Personal Financial Coaching Certification. Certified Work Incentives Counselor (or be in the process of obtaining certification).

  • Valid driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation to perform work-related travel required. Eligible drivers must have a good motor vehicle record (MVR).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess customer service experience.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficient with Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the financial industry.

  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of social security work incentives.

  • Flexible, open to change and enjoys mobility in the workplace.

  • Be a compassionate self-starter with the ability to work independently.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills.
