Overview

The Richard McLaughlin Center for Operational K9s (COPK9) is focused on optimizing the health and performance of Operational K9s (OpK9s) through innovative education, training, and research programs, empowering veterinary professionals, K9 handlers, and first responders to achieve excellence in their care and service.

What You'll Do

Under general supervision, the K9 Handler Instructor performs training, handling, and support for education, research, and clinical programs for the COPK9 Program. The K9 handler instructor will provide training to EMS, OpK9 teams, and veterinary providers, maintains training equipment and facilities, oversee safety during OpK9 clinical procedures, and help develop an OpK9 Handler network throughout New England. The K9 Handler Instructor will also provide input and assist in development of education and training platforms, as well as participate in community outreach activities.
  • Provide training and handling in support of educational, clinical and research programs associated with the COPK9.
  • Help organize an OpK9 Handler team network; socialize training, education, and clinical programs through this network.
  • Maintain pre-hospital care training equipment and facilities.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in OpK9 Handler Team skills and performance to veterinary teams and EMS.
  • Provide input in development of training programs and consensus statements for care of OpK9s.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 10 plus experience with OpK9s as a K9 Handler in law enforcement
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and lead training, establish collaborative partnerships with OpK9 handler teams and veterinary personnel who work with OpK9s.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a project towards successful outcomes, with an emphasis on excellence.
  • Excellent, professional communication skills (oral and written).
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office & email.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree or Associates Degree in a field related to law enforcement or social sciences
  • Prior experience teaching pre-hospital care training to K9 Teams and EMS.
  • Prior experience as a K9 handler in tactical law enforcement or military teams.

Pay Range

Minimum $27.30, Midpoint $32.50, Maximum $37.70

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
