| Essential Job Duties |
The Senior Academic Advisor in the Poole College of Management at NC State University is a full-time, 12-month administrative position (
EHRA) that reports directly to the Senior Associate Director of Advising or the Associate Director of Advising Programs. Our Academic Advising Team serves over 3,800 students through an integrated, team-based model.
Rather than managing individual caseloads, our advisors work through a unified system that ensures timely advising support for students. Students are expected to identify a preferred advisor but are free to consult any advising team member, ensuring prompt support even during peak periods. Success in this role requires a high degree of coordination and strong communication skills to provide a seamless and high quality continuity of service for every student.
The primary role of the Poole Academic Advising Team is to serve 3,800+ students through our team-based academic advising model. Our team members advise students on academic requirements (matriculation through graduation), course selection and registration, and other issues related to academic and student success including high impact experiences such as international study, student organizations and leadership, as well internships and co-ops. Our advisors also connect students to key support services, including, but not limited to counseling, tutoring, financial aid, and disability resources.
The Senior Academic Advisor will either coordinate or team-teach personal and professional identity development courses to undergraduate students each semester. Our team has adopted developmental and appreciative approaches to academic advising. However, our interactions with students may be more transactional during peak registration advising seasons when our traffic increases. The Senior Academic Advisor will support various programmatic efforts in the Office of Undergraduate Programs as needed (including orientation, welcome week, commencement, etc.).
Responsibilities include:
- Developing and delivering support initiatives to a variety of student populations in order to increase student engagement and success.
- Manage/advise a student organization within the college.
- Work with new students to ensure a successful transition to NC State and Poole.
- Supervise an advising graduate assistant.
- Provide leadership and guidance to primary role advisors.
- Other duties as assigned.
Opportunities for hybrid work will be offered to this individual upon completion of their onboarding and training period. |
| Other Responsibilities |
- In addition to the core responsibilities outlined above, you may take on additional duties as needed to support college initiatives.
|
Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
|
| Other Required Qualifications |
- Minimum of three years of experience in academic advising at the college level.
- Excellent communication skills: oral, written, and presentation.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate advising.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a varied array of personalities under pressure and deadlines.
- Strong team orientation; ability to closely collaborate with advising team, sub teams, and Undergraduate Programs personnel.
- Ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages in a confidential environment.
- Appreciation for various perspectives, identities, backgrounds, ages, and educational goals of current undergraduate students.
- Experience speaking to small and large groups.
- Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with the Advising Team advisors on student advising concerns.

- Both a broad and deep understanding, knowledge of, and experience with a variety of different populations of students.
