Job Description

Summary

The Assistant Director for Residential Education supports the strategic vision of MU Housing - Residential Life unit by fostering a residential campus community where students live, learn, and thrive. Guided by the core values of Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, and Excellence, this role is dedicated to promoting student success and involvement. This position provides administrative and leadership support for a residential neighborhood. A key priority is cultivating a sense of belonging, ensuring that every student feels safely integrated into the Mizzou community.

This position directly reports to the Director of Residential Life.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise 4-6 professional staff members (Sr. Hall Coordinators and Leadership Coordinator) and 65-70 student staff members for a residential neighborhood consisting of approximately 1500-2000 students.
  • Select, train, coach, supervise, and evaluate direct reports and assigned student staff. Promote and foster their professional growth, accountability, and effectiveness in supporting student learning and engagement.
  • Oversee the Leadership Coordinator and provide functional guidance for the advising and support of the Residence Halls Association (RHA), ensuring alignment between leadership development efforts and the Residential Curriculum.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the department's Residential Curriculum, ensuring alignment with institutional learning outcomes (e.g., the TIGERS Learning Framework) and student development theory.
  • Develop and deliver training for professional and student staff on curricular facilitation, learning goal assessment, and engagement strategies that promote community development and student belonging.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to integrate co-curricular initiatives that reinforce our TIGERS Learning Framework and support divisional efforts.
  • Partner in planning and implementation of community-wide engagement strategies, including wellness initiatives, student leadership, community-building, and academic support integration across residential and apartment communities.
  • Serve as a key member of the Residential Life Unit leadership team, contributing to strategic planning, departmental priorities, and crisis response coordination.
  • Serve on a leadership team within MU Housing providing insight into procedures, protocols, staffing, program development and other services
  • Serve in a weekly on-call rotation with a team of Assistant Directors responding and providing high-level responses and guidance to Residential Life live-in professional staff and student staff.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative relationship with campus partners within the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Institutional Equity, and Campus Police Department.
  • Work with fellow Assistant Directors within MU Housing to ensure departmental and divisional initiatives are being appropriately developed, implemented, and assessed for student success and development.
  • Serve as a resource to support MU Housing and Mizzou recruitment activities including but not limited to Mizzou Admissions events and tours, Meet Mizzou days, Summer Welcome, Welcome Week activities, and supporting the success of these initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with housing and campus partners to ensure the mission and vision of MU Housing is accomplished.
  • Serve as an active member of the department and other university committees/task forces as assigned.
  • Complete other duties consistent with the purpose of this position that may be assigned.
  • Provide timely and clear verbal and electronic communication with all internal and external campus partners.
Shift

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs or related field with 3 years of experience in Housing/Residential Life
  • Supervision of various levels of staff (i.e. professional, graduate, paraprofessional)
  • Ability to collaborate and direct activities of multiple groups of faculty, staff and students
  • Effective decision-making abilities
  • Excellent organization and administrative skills
  • Experience in promoting and managing student care and well-being
  • Experience with conflict mediation, crisis response and management
  • Experience in program evaluation and educational research higher education assessment
  • Experience in designing, conducting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting academic research and student outcomes assessment
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends and issues in university residential environments
  • Ability to deliver effective and engaging presentations to large crowds
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $52,915.20 - $75,000 per year
