About the Team

The Intelligence & Investigations team works to rapidly detect, understand, and disrupt abuse involving AI technologies to ensure they are used safely and responsibly. We identify emerging abuse trends, analyze risks, and partner across OpenAI to develop mitigation strategies that strengthen product safety and support high-stakes decision-making. Our work contributes directly to OpenAI's mission of ensuring AI benefits all of humanity.

About the Role

We are seeking a technical builder and operator to help extend Intelligence & Investigations capabilities into external-facing environments. This role sits at the intersection of technical development, productization, partner engagement, and operational delivery.

You will help translate internal intelligence and investigative capabilities into durable external solutions that can be deployed in real-world settings. This includes shaping early product concepts, building and adapting technical workflows, and working closely with both internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure what we develop is practical, scalable, and grounded in real operational needs.

The right person for this role is highly technical, but not limited to a narrow engineering lane. They can prototype and build, work directly with users, understand operational problems, and help turn emerging concepts into practical capabilities. They are comfortable moving between product thinking, technical implementation, external engagement, and cross-functional coordination. They are also motivated by the responsible use of AI in high-stakes environments and eager to help bring advanced technical capabilities to partners who need them.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA; Washington D.C.; or New York, NY. We offer a hybrid work model (3 days per week in office), remote flexibility where appropriate, and relocation assistance for new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Define and shape external intelligence and investigative capabilities for mission-oriented partners

  • Prototype and build technical workflows that process large-scale data to identify risks and support decision-making

  • Translate internal tools and capabilities into deployable external solutions and offerings

  • Deploy and operationalize solutions in real-world environments, driving adoption and measurable impact

  • Serve as a primary interface between Intelligence & Investigations, OAI internal teams, and external stakeholders

  • Communicate technical concepts and tradeoffs clearly to build trust and enable informed partner decisions

  • Identify and scale repeatable solutions from bespoke partner needs into durable capabilities

  • Design user-facing workflows and interfaces for non-technical or mixed-technical users

You might thrive in this role if you have / are:

  • Strong technical fluency with a track record of building or deploying data-intensive systems or workflows

  • Experience operating at the intersection of technical development and real users, including product shaping or partner-facing work

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and execute, moving from early-stage concepts to production-ready solutions

  • Skill in translating complex technical capabilities into practical, usable tools or services

  • Strong product judgment, including identifying what should scale vs. remain bespoke

  • Clear and effective communicator across both technical teams and external stakeholders

  • Experience in relevant domains such as intelligence, security, trust & safety, data analysis, or public sector technology

  • Proficiency with modern technical tooling, including data analysis (e.g., SQL, Python) and AI-enabled workflows

  • Proven cross-functional operator, able to drive alignment and execution across teams

  • Commitment to the responsible use of AI and applying technology to meaningful real-world problems
