DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Supervises staff involved in routine clinical registry data collection. Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of assigned staffs' work and ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies.

The California Birth Defects Monitoring Program (CBDMP), a program within the California Department of Public Health, is a population-based, active ascertainment registry of children born in California with one or more specific congenital and inherited disorders, e.g., major heart defects, oral clefts, neural tube defects, abdominal wall defects, and chromosomal defects. Pursuant to the H&S codes, CBDMP Registry data are used to track birth defects trends, evaluate whether environmental hazards are associated with birth defects and investigate other possible causes of birth defects.

Under the direction of the CBDMP Program Manager, the Data Collection Supervisor will supervise all birth defects data collection activities including monitoring staff productivity and data accuracy and completeness, overseeing staff scheduling and attendance, acting as the first point of contact for data collection staff questions regarding birth defects data collection processes, access to electronic health records and issues with record access or content. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical specialty and operational implications of the clinical registry. Ability to apply clinical registry knowledge to specific situations.

  • Knowledge of department, organization, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of all relevant clinical registry federal, state and local laws and regulations.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.

  • Organizational skills to applied to coordinating assigned staff schedules and storing data in a way it can easily be found and retrieved.

  • Interpersonal skills to effectively work well with others to achieve common goals. Demonstrated ability to develop working relationships with peers in clinical registries in the medical center and nationally, as well as the ability to work with clinical staff.

  • Thorough knowledge of data management and documentation methods used in clinical registries. Complex analytical skills to compiles and review data from a number of sources and determine improvements.

  • Verbal and written communication skills, to explain registry concepts, actively listen and advise. Demonstrates sound judgement in counseling staff.

  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Effectively uses clinical registry software programs. * Knowledge of and skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Power Point

  • Extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology

  • Demonstrated experience with ICD10-CM and California BPA coding.

  • Completes assignments in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse disciplines and staff roles/positions.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with staff on day to day activities as well as leadership.

  • Demonstrated reliability and integrity

  • Advanced troubleshooting skills.

  • High degree of competency in data gathering, analysis and reporting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four years of experience in related hospital health information field, three of which must in the type of work to be performed, (i.e., coder, abstractor) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of supervisory experience.

  • Extensive theoretical knowledge of human anatomy and biology, and disease process typically obtained at the collegiate level.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
