Network Security Engineer / Firewall Engineer (Palo Alto or Fortinet Focus) Location: Mostly Remote (Approximately 20% Onsite in NJ) Experience Level: Expert Level Employment Type: W2 Contract Job Description We are seeking an Expert-Level Network Security Engineer / Firewall Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert for enterprise network security and firewall technologies. Hands-on, advanced production experience with either Palo Alto OR Fortinet firewalls is absolutely critical for this role. This position requires deep expertise designing, deploying, and securing complex enterprise and data center network environments, with a strong emphasis on next-generation firewall platforms. The role is primarily remote, with limited onsite presence (up to 20%). The ideal candidate will bring strong networking fundamentals, advanced troubleshooting skills, and proven experience operating in large-scale enterprise or data center infrastructures. Key Responsibilities * Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for network security principles and industry best practices, with deep, hands-on expertise in Palo Alto and/or Fortinet firewalls * Design, configure, deploy, and document firewall architectures and network topologies using industry best practices * Create, implement, and manage firewall security policies approved by IT Cyber Security, adhering to organizational (HMH) standards * Own network and security issues end-to-end, providing advanced troubleshooting and escalating to vendor TAC when required * Deliver detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) documentation for incidents and outages * Perform firewall and network device software upgrades, firmware updates, and patch management * Develop and maintain network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) * Communicate and collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams at all levels of the organization Required Technical Skills * Network Security & Firewall Engineering (Expert Level) * Palo Alto Firewalls - deployment, configuration, policy creation, and management * OR * Fortinet Firewalls - deployment, configuration, and security policy implementation * Strong networking fundamentals, including: * TCP/IP * Routing and WAN technologies * BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, DMVPN * Switching, VLANs, and subnetting * Cisco Routers and Cisco Switches * Enterprise WAN and routing environments Top Skills (Must-Have) * Security * Firewall Engineering * Palo Alto OR Fortinet (hands-on production experience required) * Network Security * Network Engineering * Cisco Routers * Routing * WAN * Cisco Switches * BGP Additional Qualifications * Expert-level Network Engineer experience required * Hands-on experience with Cisco Nexus 9000 (Nexus 9K) switches * Experience with VXLAN in enterprise or data center environments * Proven, real-world experience deploying and configuring Palo Alto and/or Fortinet firewalls in production environments is mandatory * Ability to work independently and own complex firewall and network initiatives Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Edison, NJ.
