JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

VAST Summer Art Studio

Camp Counselor/Teaching Assistant

Location: Penn State Altoona

Program: VAST Summer Art Studio (5-Day High School Art Camp)

Camp Dates: July 13 - 17, 2026

Morning sessions: 9:00AM - 12:00PM

Afternoon sessions: 1:00PM - 4:00PM

Total Hours: Approximately 30 hours

Compensation: $16/hour

Position Overview

The Visual Art Studies (VAST) program seeks a responsible and engaged Camp Counselor / Teaching Assistant to support the VAST Summer Art Studio, a 5-day pre-college studio art camp for high school students.

This role supports faculty instructors in ceramics, digital media, and drawing while helping maintain a safe, organized, and positive studio environment. The Counselor/TA plays an essential role in student supervision, studio preparation, and daily camp operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist instructors with daily setup and cleanup of studio materials
  • Provide hands-on support to high school students during studio projects
  • Help monitor safety in ceramics, digital lab, and drawing studio environments
  • Support basic camp logistics
  • Model professionalism and respectful behavior in a pre-college setting

Qualifications

  • Must be a current undergraduate student or recent VAST graduate
  • Interest in teaching in a studio setting
  • Responsible, punctual, and able to work collaboratively

Additional requirements:

  • Must complete required background checks and clearances
  • Must be available for the full week of camp

  • Brief Statement of Interest (no more than 1 page) describing relevant experience and why they are interested in supporting a pre-college studio art program at Penn State Altoona.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
