The Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position focused on the design, development, and characterization of atmospheric pressure plasma sources. The successful candidate will join an experimental plasma physics research program centered on the development of novel plasma sources and diagnostics for applications in areas such as plasma medicine, plasma-material interactions, and related low-temperature plasma science.

This position is ideal for a motivated researcher with substantial hands-on experience in atmospheric pressure plasma source design and operation, a strong experimental background, and the ability to contribute both independently and collaboratively within an active research environment.

Responsibilities

Experimental design, plasma source development, and operation

  • Design, assemble, optimize, and operate atmospheric pressure plasma sources and related experimental hardware. This includes planning experimental campaigns, modifying source configurations as needed, troubleshooting performance issues, and carrying out routine laboratory testing to support research objectives.

Plasma diagnostics and data acquisition

  • Apply and support plasma diagnostic techniques used to characterize source performance and plasma behavior, including passive optical emission spectroscopy and rotational/vibrational spectroscopy. Duties include setting up diagnostic equipment, collecting experimental data, calibrating instruments, and ensuring accurate and repeatable measurements.

Data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of results

  • Analyze experimental data using appropriate scientific and computational methods, interpret findings in the context of ongoing research goals, and prepare results for dissemination. This includes drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, contributing to conference presentations, and assisting with technical reports and related research documentation.

Support of laser spectroscopic diagnostics

  • Assist in the operation, alignment, and general implementation of laser spectroscopic diagnostics, including laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF), and related techniques. Responsibilities include supporting setup and operation of optical hardware, coordinating diagnostic use with ongoing experiments, and helping maintain system functionality.

Student mentoring and collaborative research support

  • Provide day-to-day guidance to undergraduate and graduate students involved in laboratory research. This includes assisting with experimental procedures, training students in laboratory methods and safe practices, helping troubleshoot experiments, and contributing to a collaborative and productive group research environment.

General laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, and safety

  • Maintain general laboratory functionality through organization, upkeep, and routine maintenance of research equipment and associated systems, including basic vacuum hardware. Responsibilities include monitoring equipment condition, performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance, managing laboratory materials and supplies, and supporting compliance with laboratory safety procedures and best practices.

Qualifications

Professional Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in physics, plasma science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field by the start date
  • Familiarity with or willingness to assist in the operation of laser spectroscopic diagnostics, including LIF, TALIF, and related techniques
  • Experience with basic vacuum hardware, including setup, operation, and routine maintenance
  • A record of scientific productivity, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated proficiency in experimental plasma diagnostics, especially optical diagnostics
  • Strong general laboratory skills, including experimental setup, troubleshooting, instrumentation use, and technical documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Plasma source development for biomedical, materials, propulsion, or other applied plasma environments
  • Optical or laser-based plasma diagnostics, including LIF, TALIF, or related spectroscopic methods
  • High-voltage systems, pulsed power, or RF power delivery
  • Data analysis and programming in environments such as Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW
  • Mechanical design, CAD, or experimental hardware prototyping
  • Supervising or mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers
  • Scientific proposal development or participation in multi-institutional collaborative research

The successful candidate may be permitted to begin employment prior to degree confirmation with a letter certifying the trainee has completed all degree requirements from their university.
