The Trade Chemistry Specialist will support the U.S. Forest Service International Programs' Wood Identification and Screening Center (WISC) in advancing global efforts to combat illegal timber trafficking. Working in a laboratory setting in Vancouver, Washington, this role collaborates closely with analytical chemists, lab technicians, and academic partners to expand the use of advanced wood identification technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and support start-up operations for a new wood identification laboratory, including workflow development and standard operating procedures.
  • Catalog and organize a reference library of wood samples using systematic (alphabetical and numerical) methods.
  • Collect and analyze chemical data from reference specimens using multiple analytical instruments, including mass spectrometry.
  • Execute laboratory workflows and processes related to analytical services and regulatory support.
  • Manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including coordination with partners and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with academic partners and researchers on shared scientific objectives.
  • Assist with training activities, study tours, and workshops related to wood identification technologies.
  • Support expansion of WISC services into commercial regulatory applications.
  • Maintain regular communication and reporting to the Assistant Director for Trade.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience with chemical instrumentation, particularly mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage samples, data, and workflows.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, technicians, and external partners.
