What to Expect

Tesla is seeking an ambitious Electrical Safety Engineer to support Engineering and R&D teams in North America. In this role, you will act as the technical expert in electrical and battery safety and will drive first-principles solutions for Engineering and R&D teams. You will directly lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of technical programs alongside the Lab Operations EHS teams. You will systematically document risks in the labs using an FMEA-style approach and find solutions with stakeholders to continuously drive down these risks.

You will also assist with safe design, build and commissioning for machines, R&D setups and internal products, and work to standardize practices with other R&D operations globally. You will support management of change and new product, process or equipment introduction, specifically pertaining to automated equipment and manual or semi-manual research and development processes.

You will use human and organizational principles to drive ownership of safety, health and environmental impacts, with a focus on engagement, learning from events and a systems-level problem solving.


What You'll Do
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of labs and equipment for stakeholders in Abuse Test & Engineering, Test Systems Engineering, Energy Engineering and others
  • Implement structured and rigorous risk mitigation solutions for identified hazards alongside business stakeholders
  • Partner with Equipment Safety, Ergonomics and Process Safety engineering subject matter experts to provide EHS solutions for internal machine and process designs
  • Lead EHS tool deployment for R&D and Engineering teams to streamline operations and compliance
  • Support day-to-day technical EHS escalations in Tesla's Lab Operations EHS organization
  • Drive continuous improvement for EHS programs (LOTO, Machine Safety, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Ergonomics, Education / Training, Risk Assessment, Incident Analysis)
  • Manage stakeholders and lead cross-departmental initiatives to meet risk reduction targets

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Engineering, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in an Engineering EHS position, with a focus in an R&D or startup environment
  • Experience in facilitating risk assessment and process hazard assessment methodologies, such as HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, DHAs or ISO-12100 compliant Machine Risk Assessments
  • Experience in developing and managing electrical safety for high voltage (>50V) and/or power distribution (>1kV) systems, including: LOTO procedures, switching programs, utility-level clearances, as well as supporting field verification and emergency response
  • Work experience in vehicle, battery, power distribution, semiconductor or other high-tech high-risk industry
  • Work experience with project management tools and methodologies (e.g. Jira, Confluence, Sistema, CAD)
  • Working ability to read and understand Mechanical, Electrical, and Architectural permit sets, CAD drawings, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)

    Expected Compensation
    $100,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
