As the University Landscape Architect, you will play a central role in shaping and sustaining Duke's outdoor environments-ensuring they reflect our historic context, climate commitments, and high standards of aesthetic quality.Reporting to the Director of Planning & Design, you will join the Office of Planning & Design, a multidisciplinary team with expertise in campus planning, architecture, landscape architecture, CAD, and GIS. Together, you will guide the planning, design, and long-term stewardship of Duke's campus landscape.


Qualifications



  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture
  • Minimum of six years of relevant professional experience
  • Landscape Architecture licensure preferred
  • Higher education or campus environment experience preferred

You will help lead the continued evolution of Duke's campus by overseeing the spaces between buildings, natural areas, circulation systems, and public gathering places. With a high level of accountability, you'll collaborate with campus partners and external experts to deliver landscape solutions that support Duke's academic mission and future growth.


What You'll Do:


  • Partner with campus user groups, departments, and leadership to understand needs and priorities for exterior campus spaces
  • Collaborate with consulting landscape architects, architects, civil and environmental engineers throughout all phases of planning and design for capital projects
  • Develop landscape design plans and oversee implementation of small-scale landscape improvement projects
  • Assist with the selection and coordination of planning and design consultants
  • Maintain and enforce Duke's landscape design guidelines and standards
  • Ensure all site and landscape projects align with the University Master Plan
  • Support established working groups and committees related to project planning and design
  • Stay current with trends, pedagogy, and best practices in landscape architecture and campus planning
  • Prepare visual and written materials and present landscape-focused initiatives to Duke senior leadership, as needed
  • Perform related duties in support of campus planning and design initiatives



Skills & Competencies



  • Strong knowledge of landscape architecture, campus planning, and design
  • Proven experience producing, supervising, and reviewing landscape plans
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and related software
  • Strong graphic and visual communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with faculty, staff, internal clients, and external consultants
  • Excellent written communication skills, including drafting reports, memos, and planning documents

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. North Carolina Board of Architecture license is also required.

Experience

Eligibility for licensure examination requires three years experience under the direct supervision of a licensed Architect. Thirteen years of training under a licensed Architect may be substituted for the above education and experience per N.C. Board of Architecture. Licensure is still mandatory. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE


Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $78,161.00 to USD $156,319.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
