Position Description:

Search internal to University of Iowa, College of Dentistry only. Position restricted to applicants who are current permanent University of Iowa/College of Dentistry faculty.

The University of Iowa's College of Dentistry is conducting a search for aGraduate Program Director in the Department of Operative Dentistry.

Major responsibilities include:





  • Provide leadership in curriculum development; resident recruitment, evaluation, and mentoring; faculty development; and accountability for future Operative Graduate student CODA accreditation process.
  • Provide academic and clinical leadership for the Advanced Education Program in Operative Dentistry, supporting continuous program development and alignment with departmental and college goals.
  • Lead efforts to enhance clinical productivity, efficiency, and case complexity within the graduate operative clinic, including comprehensive and interdisciplinary care.
  • Coordinate and support an effective collaborative, team-based clinical environment.
  • Mentor graduate students in advanced operative dentistry, clinical decision-making, and comprehensive patient care, while supporting scholarship, career development, and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with Operative Dentistry faculty, instructors, and other departments to ensure calibrated teaching and integrated, interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Participate in graduate and/or predoctoral teaching and contribute to departmental and college service as appropriate.




Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

Education Requirement:


  • DDS or DMD (or equivalent degree).
  • Completion of an advanced dental education program in Operative Dentistry at a CODA-accredited dental school.


Required Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated excellence in operative dentistry clinical practice.
  • Experience in graduate or advanced dental education in Operative Dentistry, including resident clinical teaching and mentorship.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary operative dentistry practices, techniques, and technologies, with emphasis on digital dentistry and esthetics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic service and participation in graduate and predoctoral teaching aligned with departmental needs and collegiate missions.
  • Experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment for people from all types of backgrounds.
  • Current active clinical or tenure-track UI faculty appointment.

  • Board certification through the American Board of Operative Dentistry

  • Experience in curriculum design or refinement, resident recruitment and/or assessment, and continuous quality improvement in didactic and clinical teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance clinical productivity, efficiency, and/or treatment complexity in an academic or advanced clinical setting.
  • Evidence of effective interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and clinical teams to support integrated, comprehensive patient care.
  • Ability to collaboratively coordinate clinical staff to maintain efficient clinic operations.
