We are seeking an experienced Materials Testing / Geotechnical Project Manager to lead and oversee geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing (CMT) projects throughout the San Diego region. This role is responsible for managing project delivery, client relationships, field and laboratory operations, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong leader with proven project management experience in geotechnical engineering and materials testing, who thrives in a fast-paced consulting environment.



Responsibilities

Project Management & Delivery

    Manage multiple geotechnical and construction materials testing projects from proposal through closeout
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource plans
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements
  • Monitor project financial performance, including budgets, invoices, and profitability

Technical Oversight

  • Provide technical guidance for field staff, engineers, and technicians
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans, local agency requirements)

Construction Materials Testing (CMT)

  • Direct materials testing operations including soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing
  • Coordinate field technicians and special inspectors on active job sites
  • Ensure quality control, safety compliance, and adherence to project specifications

Client & Business Development

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and networking
  • Identify new project opportunities within existing and prospective clients

Team Leadership

  • Mentor and supervise junior engineers, technicians, and project staff
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including field, lab, and administrative personnel
  • Promote a safety-first culture and enforce company safety policies


Qualifications

  • 5-10+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering and/or construction materials testing and Special Inspections
  • Proven experience managing projects and client relationships
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Soil mechanics and foundation design
    • Earthwork and grading practices
    • Materials testing standards (ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans)
  • Experience overseeing field and laboratory testing operations
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites

Preferred:

  • Certifications such as:
    • ICC Special Inspector
    • NICET (Construction Materials Testing)
    • ACI (Concrete Field Testing Technician)
  • Experience working on Southern California projects and familiarity with local agencies
  • Background in both geotechnical engineering and CMT services

The pay range for this position in California is $80,000 to $110,000 per year. Base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
