Position Purpose
Under supervision from the Building Repair Shop Supervisor and senior technicians, the Painter I completes quality painting projects requiring attention to appearance, function and durability. Develops painting skills and techniques to prepare and coat interior and exterior walls, ceilings and other surfaces of the College's buildings and structures. Works as a crew member on large scale projects or with a senior technician on smaller routine projects. The Painter I is an entry level position with a specified level of skill and proficiency in the execution of painting duties.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Ability to follow oral & written instructions and to work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations applicable to the use of ladders, ropes, harnesses, and scaffolds.
  • Must be capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and capable of responding to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

    EPA R.R.P. Lead Training
    OSHA 10HR Class
    Driver Safety
    Hazard Communication
    Respirator Training, Fit, and Physical Examination
    Asbestos Awareness

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience performing painting repairs and maintenance, including surface repair using putty, plaster, joint compound or other appropriate method; application of pre-mixed paints/stains using brushes, rollers, spray or other appropriate method; equipment cleaning and disposal.

Responsibilities


  • Working with senior technicians, responds to work orders.
  • Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.
  • Prepares the surfaces for new finish, removing old finishes when necessary.
  • Prepares new work plugging holes, cleaning, final sanding.
  • Repairs surfaces using putty, plaster, joint compound, or other appropriate material.
  • Selects pre-mixed paints/stains including enamels, specialty paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, & shellacs.
  • Prepares products per manufacturer's instructions.
  • Applies products using brushes, rollers, spray, or other appropriate method.
  • Cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other equipment; safely disposes of used paints and rags.
  • Protects surrounding areas.
  • Uses ladders, scaffold, &/or platform as appropriate in a safe manner.
