Position Summary
The Director, Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for the financial management of an assigned department and affiliated foundation. This role oversees all aspects of budgeting, financial reporting, accounting, billing, compliance, audits, and financial planning while serving as a trusted advisor to departmental leadership. The Director partners with hospital administration, physician leaders, principal investigators, and finance teams to ensure sound financial stewardship, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability. Key Responsibilities Direct and manage the day-to-day financial operations of the department and affiliated foundation, including accounting, billing, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Lead, mentor, and develop finance and administrative staff, establishing priorities, monitoring performance, and resolving operational challenges. Develop, prepare, and monitor annual operating and capital budgets, providing ongoing variance analysis, forecasting, and financial recommendations. Prepare and present financial reports, projections, and analyses to departmental leadership, Partner with hospital finance teams to ensure departmental financial data is accurately reflected in institutional financial systems, reports, and financial statements. Interpret and communicate hospital, physician organization, government, and accounting regulations, ensuring compliance with applicable financial standards and policies. Collaborate with leadership to identify and resolve financial, operational, and process-related challenges Support the foundation's annual independent audit, including preparation of financial statements, supporting schedules, variance reporting, and responses to audit findings. Develop and implement financial controls, policies, procedures, and process improvements to strengthen compliance and operational performance. Recommend accounting procedures related to grant and contract administration Conduct financial analyses to evaluate funding needs, expenses, and other departmental financial priorities. Serve as a strategic resource on complex financial issues, supporting decision-making and long-term planning initiatives. Build strong partnerships across the organization and effectively influence, persuade, and negotiate with peer-level directors, physician leaders, and stakeholders on issues impacting the department and foundation. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Master's degree preferred. Experience: Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, or related areas required. Extensive experience preparing financial statements, managing budgets, forecasting, and performing variance analysis. Strong understanding of financial regulations, accounting standards, compliance requirements, and financial management practices. Requires the ability to effectively manage employees within assigned unit/department and to persuade and negotiate with peer-level directors on issues and programs that impact the department and foundation. Proven ability to analyze complex financial information and provide recommendations to senior leadership. Experience supporting audits, financial controls, and process improvement initiatives. Ability to manage competing priorities and influence stakeholders in a complex healthcare, academic, research, or nonprofit environment. Schedule: Full-time- remote The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
