The M&R Operations Manager is responsible for the effective planning, execution and supervision of the duties associated with terminal M&R operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe and productive operations for your customers, area and union staff. This role is also responsible for the development and achievement of operational and financial goals and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • Effectively supervises and directs the work activities of IAM union mechanics, foremen and other personnel and union labor; ensuring performance expectations and customer needs are met.
  • Develops short range business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives while operating within approved fiscal budget.
  • Determines the amount of labor needed for each day and ensures labor scheduled appropriately for assigned Department.
  • Makes decisions affecting overtime cost and general expenditures and ensures they are made in the best interest of our company and customers, using available data.
  • Determines additional staffing / labor needs and ensures cost-effective staffing and availability, using data from labor and operational data.
  • Ensures payroll accuracy and makes appropriate changes as needed.
  • Identify process gaps or inefficiencies and lead process improvement initiatives to streamline workflows.
  • Actively champions and manages the company's Safety program ensuring that all labor and staff comply with accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures.
  • Reviews Safety trends for assigned area and incorporates corrective measures.
  • Develops, reviews and approves efficient operational plans for the department including power, chassis, refrigeration, roadability.
  • Works closely with Terminal Departments to ensure the appropriate equipment allocation meets operational demands.
  • Maintains positive relations with labor and union officials and that the Collective Bargaining Agreements associated to your workforce are understood and followed.
  • Directs Foremen to counsel and discipline mechanics when necessary.
  • Counsels, disciplines Foremen when necessary.
  • Assist or lead on disciplinary meetings, actions, and documentation for all Husky IAM mechanics.
  • Ensures union leadership enforces collective bargaining agreements and works in the best interest of the company.
  • Advises Director of M&R on concerns and investigates matters and assist in adjudicating all complaints filed.
  • Participate in Labor Relation meetings for grievances or concerns brought forth by IAM shop stewards, and inform peers and direct managers of outcome.
  • Communicates areas of accountability and performance expectations to labor.
  • Develops, communicates, maintains and improves operating and administrative procedures (consistent with area procedures and objectives) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
  • Ensure that all company policies, procedures and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff and labor have a full understanding of these procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned and relevant

  • Comply with Corporate Safety and department policies and procedures.
  • Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies, and procedures; and actively participate in the Husky's Emergency Preparedness program and activities

Education:



  • BS/BA degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience working in management


Related experience:



  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Terminal Operations, Heavy Equipment Maintenance Management, or closely related field in a dynamic environment.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:



  • Demonstrated leadership managing union contracts and union labor.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to safety and accident prevention, safety codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations and cargo stowage


Technical Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of



  • Experience with computerized operating systems
  • Ability to support operations with all work shifts, days, nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems is a plus

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions, wet/humid environment, non-weather conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud.
