Position Summary
The Engineer III - Asset Design provides advanced-level technical oversight and design governance with primary responsibilities for Downtown Underground (DTUG) / distribution network design, including the planning, development, review, and coordination of complex underground network distribution designs in dense urban environments. Additional responsibilities include support for Feeder Hardening (FH), Lateral Hardening Overhead (LHO), Overhead-to-Underground (UG) conversions, highway relocations, and other capital projects under the Asset Design portfolio.
Responsibilities
This role ensures safe, compliant, constructible, and schedule-aligned network and distribution designs that support reliable service in complex downtown underground environments, while also providing design support for FH, LHO, UG conversions, and highway relocation workstreams. The position coordinates closely with contract engineering partners (CEPs), construction, planning, municipalities, transportation agencies, and project management functions.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign Oversight & Technical Authority
* Serve as the Asset Design technical authority for Downtown Underground (DTUG) / distribution network design, with primary accountability for complex urban underground distribution design solutions.
* Oversee concept, preliminary, and detailed network design development performed internally or by Contract Engineering Partners (CEPs), ensuring alignment with system requirements, constructability expectations, and municipal or jurisdictional constraints.
* Ensure DTUG and network designs meet Duke Energy standards, NESC requirements, safety expectations, and long-term operational needs throughout the design lifecycle.
* Provide additional design oversight and technical support for Feeder Hardening (FH), Lateral Hardening Overhead (LHO), Overhead-to-Underground (UG) conversions, and highway relocation projects as assigned.SPP / SO Program Execution Support
* Translate SPP / SO targets and scope into executable design packages that align with program scope and delivery schedules.
* Support design sequencing, collaborate with construction and provide scope clarity to support multiyear gridhardening execution.
* Identify and resolve design risks that could impact schedule, cost, or constructability.Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
* Support and document QA/QC reviews at concept, preliminary, and final design milestones, including:
* Scope adherence
* Standards compliance
* Coordination with adjacent work orders
* Constructability and field readiness.
* Lead or participate in Engineering & Construction (E&CR) walkdowns and incorporate field feedback into final designs.Contractor & Partner Coordination
* Provide daytoday technical direction and oversight of Contract Engineering Partners (CEPs) performing Asset Design work.
* Resolve design questions, scope clarifications, and technical conflicts in coordination with construction and project teams.
* Ensure CEP deliverables meet quality, schedule, and documentation requirements.CrossFunctional Coordination
* Coordinate with Project Management, Resource & Work Management, Construction Management, Planning, and Operations to ensure design alignment with execution plans.
* Support constructability reviews and schedule alignment for gridhardening work.Documentation & Governance
* Ensure design packages, calculations, and assumptions are clearly documented.
* Support internal reporting, milestone tracking, and leadership updates related to SO/SPP design execution.
* Contribute to continuous improvement of Asset Design workflows, standards, and job aids.Preferred Qualifications
* Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
* Direct experience with downtown underground (DTUG) / distribution network design.
* Direct experience supporting SPP, SO, or similar gridhardening / resiliency programs.
* Experience with UG conversions, lateral hardening strategies, and feeder hardening execution.
* Familiarity with multiyear capital program delivery and crossfunctional utility operations.Key Competencies

Required/Basic Qualifications
* Bachelors degree in Engineering
* 4 years related work experience
* In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND 4 year(s) related work experience listed above, Bachelors degree in another field of study and Masters in Engineering

* Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
* Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions

* Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility

Specific Requirements

* Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

* Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

* A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
