The Building People, LLC seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide on-call mechanical engineering services in support of government facility projects and evaluations. The Senior Mechanical Engineer performs building evaluations, surveys, studies, and design work; reviews construction documents; and documents systems including heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC), hydronic piping, steam systems, chilled water systems, and complex alternative HVAC systems. The role encompasses load calculations, design of facility management and control systems, energy modeling and analysis, code reviews, value engineering, life cycle cost analysis, quality control, construction administration, and related services.

Required Experience & Skills



  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in mechanical engineering within building systems environments
  • Experience performing building evaluations, surveys, engineering studies, and developing detailed design documentation for HVAC and mechanical systems
  • Proficiency in load calculations for complex mechanical systems in commercial or federal facilities
  • Experience with hydronic piping, steam, and chilled water systems design and specification
  • Demonstrated ability to perform energy modeling and analysis, life cycle cost analyses, and value engineering studies
  • Experience creating and editing engineering specifications and reviewing construction documents
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical engineering codes and standards for commercial and federal facilities
  • Experience providing quality control review and construction administration support
  • All personnel must obtain and maintain a Public Trust (Level 3) security clearance.



Preferred Experience & Skills



  • Experience with alternative or complex HVAC systems design for large federal or law enforcement facilities
  • Familiarity with GSA construction standards and federal facility management and control systems
  • Experience designing facility management and automated control systems



Required Education



  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Master of Science (M.S.) Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university engineering program

    Active registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the relevant jurisdiction



Preferred Education



  • Master of Science (M.S.) Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Additional training or credentials in energy modeling or building systems commissioning
