Description

Are you an expert in undersea energetics design, development, and testing?

Do you want to be part of a multidisciplinary technical team committed to solving important national security challenges?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Maritime Information Exploitation Group seeks a Senior Undersea Energetics Engineer to support the development, assessment, and transition of advanced undersea warfare technologies for the Department of War focusing on U.S. Navy applications. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, analysis, testing, and evaluation of warheads, energetic systems, mine countermeasure technologies, and related undersea weapon concepts. This role offers the opportunity to work directly with Navy sponsors, operational stakeholders, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop solutions that address critical maritime security challenges.

The ideal candidate possesses hands-on experience developing and evaluating energetic systems and warheads, applying modeling and simulation tools to understand weapon performance and target effects, and leading the execution of laboratory and field testing activities. Candidates should be comfortable working across the full technology lifecycle, from concept development and analysis through testing, transition, and operational application.

As an Undersea Energetics Engineer you will:

  • Develop and evaluate advanced warhead and energetics concepts for undersea warfare, mine countermeasures, and related Navy mission areas.
  • Perform engineering analysis, modeling, and simulation to assess weapon performance, target interactions, lethality, survivability, and mission effectiveness.
  • Design, plan, execute, and analyze laboratory, field, and at-sea test events to characterize system performance and validate engineering models.
  • Engage with Fleet, S&T/RDT&E, acquisition, and industry communities to understand operational challenges and develop technically sound and mission-relevant solutions.
  • Lead technical tasks and support program execution across multiple projects and sponsors.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations through written reports, technical publications, and sponsor briefings.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in undersea energetics, warhead engineering, lethality analysis, weapons effects, or related defense applications.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, evaluating, or assessing undersea warheads, energetic systems, or weapons technologies.
  • Experience applying modeling and simulation tools to analyze dynamic events involving blast, shock, penetration, impact, underwater explosions, or related physical phenomena.
  • Experience planning, conducting, and analyzing developmental or operational test activities.
  • Experience working with government sponsors, program offices, warfare centers, or operational stakeholders.
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Experience leading technical programs, multidisciplinary engineering teams, or large-scale test efforts.
  • Demonstrated success identifying, developing, or capturing new research and development opportunities.
