Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Clinician to provide quality mental health services to incarcerated adult men in a correctional setting. Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and Mental Health Unit Chief, this position is responsible for conducting assessments, providing crisis intervention, coordinating patient care, developing treatment plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure appropriate mental health services and continuity of care.

Job Responsibilities




  • Conduct mental health evaluations, assessments, crisis intervention, and follow-up care.



  • Determine the appropriate level of mental health care and coordinate patient disposition.



  • Coordinate discharge planning services with Reentry Social Workers.



  • Develop, facilitate, and lead therapeutic group sessions on mental health observation units and other assigned units.



  • Collaborate with correctional staff to ensure patient access, appropriate housing, and treatment coordination.



  • Coordinate patient care with medical staff and other institutional programs.



  • Complete all required clinical documentation, statistical reports, and treatment records accurately and timely.



  • Participate in weekly clinical supervision with the Clinical Supervisor.



  • Participate in assigned mental health rounds and medical rounds.



  • Participate in case conferences and interdisciplinary treatment planning.



  • Conduct psychological testing when assigned.



  • Supervise social work interns or student volunteers when assigned.



  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.




Job Requirements




  • Previous experience conducting mental health assessments and treatment for adults with behavioral health conditions, substance use disorders, and severe mental illness preferred.



  • Inpatient psychiatric or related behavioral health experience preferred.



  • Active New York State License in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology required.



  • Strong assessment, crisis intervention, and clinical documentation skills.



  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a correctional healthcare environment.



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.



  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment.




Education




  • Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or a related behavioral health field required.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Position is based at Rikers Island and serves both pretrial detainees and convicted individuals.



  • Candidates must present two forms of identification during the onboarding process.



  • Selected candidates must successfully complete all required correctional facility clearance processes, including Department of Correction and PREA requirements.



  • Work is performed in a secure correctional healthcare environment.
