The Loudoun County Health Department provides health services that enhance and ensure the health of all Loudoun County residents including protecting the environment, preventing the spread of disease, and promoting health.


Job Summary

The Loudoun County Health Department is seeking a skilled, independent, and highly motivated individual to serve as a Disease Intervention Specialist in our Clinical Health Services Division. This position is based at our office in Leesburg, Virginia. This is a new full-time role with core work hours of Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

As a Disease Intervention Specialist, you'll play a key role in protecting and improving the health of Loudoun County residents. This is a meaningful opportunity to make a direct and lasting impact on our community.

Specifically, this position includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Conducts investigations for communicable diseases such as sexually transmitted infections (STI'S), tuberculosis and vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • In addition to clinic support, work involves conducting home visits, field investigations, and community outreach as needed.
  • Interviews individuals diagnosed with or exposed to communicable diseases using established protocols.
  • Experience conducting confidential interviews, partner services, outbreak investigations, or communicable disease case management.
  • Collects and documents demographic, clinical, and exposure information through interviews, home visits, field investigations and community outreach.
  • Provides professional, culturally sensitive, and HIPAA-compliant communication with clients, healthcare providers and community partners.
  • Provides risk-reduction counseling, health education, and referrals to testing, treatment and support services.
  • Assesses patient's need for care and initiates the referral process for newly diagnosed patients and for those who are lost-to-care.
  • Receives, reviews and prioritizes communicable disease reports from surveillance system and internal workflows.
  • Supports disease surveillance, case management, and documentation using electronic system and technology.
  • Collaborates with state and regional Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) and public health partners to prevent disease transmission.
  • Maintains current knowledge of CDC treatment guidelines and state public health protocols.
  • Serves as an integral member of the STI clinical team, providing on-site client support for public health services.
  • Participates in community outreach and health education activities to promote disease prevention and awareness.
  • Assists with investigations and management of other communicable diseases as needed.
  • Performs additional public health duties and special projects in support of departmental goals.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Sciences, Social Work, Nursing, or related field (Masters preferred); experience in public health, case management, social services, healthcare, communicable disease investigation, or contact tracing preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience as a Disease Intervention Specialist.
  • Experience working with Virginia Department of Health (VDH), local health departments, or other government public health agencies.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills are highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidates will undergo background checks as required. Valid driver's license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Complete FEMA ICS Certifications 100 and 700 within six (6) months of hire.
