Graphic Designer II (On-Call) * Public Health Communications

The on-call Graphic Designer II is able to work both independently and collaboratively with the graphic design team to design and create files for print and online materials such as reports, social media posts, brochures, infographics, educational resources, and promotional campaign materials. The Graphic Designer II proactively applies and continuously augments their graphic design training, experience, and skills in visual style and branding, illustration/photography and/or management of illustrated and photography assets, document formatting and page design, data visualization, copy layout, creation of original and adapted graphic elements for a range of resources, and other aspects of graphic design. The Graphic Designer II remains aware of current and emerging best practices in the graphic design field with a focus on innovation and continuous process improvement. As a member of JBS's collaborative, award-winning creative and multimedia team, the Graphic Designer II seeks to understand client brand standards and create visually engaging concepts and the best approach to various client requests across a range of federal, state, regional, and nonprofit projects. The Graphic Designer II uses their experience and ability to insightfully interpret client feedback and make quick and impactful design changes. This position is well-versed in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat DC, as well as other graphic design and related multimedia tools (e.g., Canva, Procreate) and the standard suite of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, and Articulate Storyline is a valuable asset, though not required, and may support a broader range of multimedia and learning projects.

****NOTE: This is an on-call position. JBS retains a roster of on-call staff to assist with surge capacity needs on a range of projects. On-call staff workloads may vary significantly over time; there is no minimum guaranteed number of hours for staff on the roster. JBS makes every effort to plan assignments for on-call staff in advance, but some assignments will require quick turnarounds on short notice. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, including promptly responding to requests, proactively updating stakeholders on project progress, and consistently meeting established deadlines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Designs and creates files for print and digital materials such as reports, social media posts, downloadable PDF tip sheets, presentation slides decks, brochures, mood boards, storyboards, infographics (for print and web), promotional campaign materials, etc.
  • Assists senior graphic designers in making additions and revisions to existing files
  • Understands and maintains various client brand standards
  • Meets assigned project deadlines, tracks deliverables across the development lifecycle, and maintains process flow
  • Applies established client brand standards to designs and assists with brand development for clients, including logos, typography, color palettes, and images
  • Searches for stock images and helps maintain stock asset repositories
  • Retouches and colors correct images
  • Manages and maintains company-standard file structures for working assets
  • Determines best possible design approach to assigned job requests
  • Reviews and interprets client/project manager feedback on designs


MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Language: English Fluency (Written and Oral)

Experience:



  • 5+ years of graphic design experience
  • Portfolio of work products (please share link in cover letter or application) showcasing breadth and depth of candidate's design capabilities
  • Experience with print and digital media layout and production best practices, including designing for accessibility/Section 508 compliance
  • Ability to follow specific branding requirements for various media.
  • Well-versed in use of Adobe Creative Cloud programs: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat DC
  • Experience working with technical and scientific content with the ability to present complex data and evidence-based information in highly engaging visual formats, in collaboration with subject matter experts


Technical Knowledge:



  • Well-versed in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat DC
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, with an emphasis on style features and formatting functions in Word and PowerPoint
  • Expertise in designing graphics in accordance with section 508 accessibility and compliance standards
  • Data visualization programs, approaches, methods, etc.

Security Clearance: Requires the ability to obtain a Public Trust

Location: Remote with the consideration that if a candidate lives within a 50-mile radius of our North Bethesda or San Mateo offices, employment will be considered hybrid.

Physical Requirements:



  • Extended Computer Use: Ability to sit for extended periods and operate a computer keyboard and mouse
  • Vision: Must be able to see and read computer screens and printed materials
  • Dexterity: Capable of using hands and fingers to operate equipment and perform tasks requiring precision
  • Communication: Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with team members and stakeholders
  • Mobility: Frequently required to stand, walk, reach, and bend to access office equipment and attend meetings
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances
  • Sensory Abilities: Must be able to perceive and interact with the environment using hearing and speaking skills
  • Work Environment: Primarily works in a typical office environment, with exposure to computer screens and moderate noise levels
