Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's growing Winooski, VT Environmental Services Group is actively seeking On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians to support upcoming Phase I, II, III archaeological field survey work for projects throughout Vermont and the New England region during the 2026 field season. Projects are expected to begin in August and last up to several weeks or more. Lodging accommodations, meals, and vehicle mileage will be reimbursed. Candidates will be responsible for transportation to survey areas with preference given to those candidates who currently reside in Vermont and neighboring states.

Responsibilities

    Conduct Phase I, II, III archaeological fieldwork, including pedestrian survey, shovel testing, and field data recording of soils, artifact finds, and site resources in accordance with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation's 2017 Guidelines for Conducting Archaeology in Vermont
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of data using handheld GPS units, Survey123 and Field Maps App.
  • Work closely under the supervision of senior VHB archaeologists

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
  • Motivated to lead and mentor others

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
  • At least six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring preferred
  • Completion of an accredited field school or equivalent experience
  • Experience working as a field archaeologist. Experience in New England preferred.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological field and laboratory techniques
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to carry field equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods.
  • Valid driver's license

The hourly range for this position, located in Vermont, is $23 to $28. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package.
