Position Summary
The Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing blood collections and specimen processing in a fast-paced Patient Service Center while delivering exceptional patient care. This role requires expertise in venipuncture for patients of all ages, specimen handling, data entry, and laboratory processing. The ideal candidate will be comfortable performing drug screens, pediatric collections, and high-volume blood draws while maintaining compliance with laboratory protocols and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform 25-35 venipunctures per day using straight and butterfly needles.
- Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages, including pediatric patients.
- Perform drug screen collections according to established procedures.
- Properly identify patients and explain specimen collection procedures in a professional and courteous manner.
- Label, centrifuge, process, split, store, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing and transport.
- Verify physician orders and laboratory requisitions to ensure specimen accuracy.
- Enter patient demographics and specimen information into laboratory systems with a high degree of accuracy.
- Maintain specimen integrity by following established handling, storage, temperature, and transportation requirements.
- Package and prepare specimens for shipment to testing laboratories.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance, decontamination, and maintenance documentation.
- Maintain inventory and stock phlebotomy and laboratory supplies.
- Answer telephone inquiries and provide laboratory-related information as appropriate.
- Follow OSHA, HIPAA, and all laboratory safety and infection control guidelines.
- Participate in required department training and quality assurance activities.
- Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff in a fast-paced team environment.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience.
- Experience performing venipuncture using both straight and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen collection, processing, centrifuging, and laboratory preparation.
- Strong data entry and computer skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to perform blood collections for patients of all ages.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent patient identification and documentation skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, fast-paced Patient Service Center.
- Ability to stand for extended periods based on patient volume.
- Valid Phlebotomy Certification if required by state regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing drug screen collections.
- Experience collecting specimens from pediatric patients.
- Previous experience in a large Patient Service Center or outpatient laboratory.
- Experience working with laboratory information systems.
