Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) examinations at a technical level that does not require direct supervision. The DEXA Technologist performs a variety of bone densitometry procedures utilizing low-dose ionizing radiation to produce diagnostic images and data for interpretation by a physician. Responsible for preparing and positioning patients, operating DEXA equipment, ensuring image quality, and following established safety, quality, and departmental protocols while providing compassionate patient care.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) examinations according to physician orders, departmental protocols, and established quality standards, ensuring accurate and complete studies. (35%)

  • Prepares and positions patients for DEXA procedures by verifying patient identity, explaining the examination, obtaining pertinent clinical information, and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. (20%)

  • Operates and maintains DEXA imaging equipment by performing quality control procedures, recognizing equipment malfunctions, and reporting issues to ensure optimal equipment performance and regulatory compliance. (15%)

  • Reviews images and examination data for diagnostic quality, ensuring studies are complete and meet established departmental and physician requirements before submission for interpretation. Completes necessary post processing, which may include, but is not limited to, inclusions, exclusions, and reprocessing (15%)

  • Maintains accurate patient records and documentation within the electronic medical record and imaging systems, including exam completion and required quality assurance documentation. (5%)

  • Practices radiation safety and infection prevention standards by adhering to ALARA principles, departmental policies, regulatory requirements, and established safety protocols (5%)

  • Collaborates with radiologists and healthcare team members to coordinate patient care, communicate pertinent information, and support efficient department operations while providing excellent customer service. (5%)

Education:

  • Must have successfully completed an accredited ARRT program in Radiologic Technologies Required

Work Experience:

  • None required.

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required

  • ARRT-American Registry of Radiologic Technologist-Sonography/AART(S) - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required

  • Bone Densitometry Certification (DEXA) - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in how to operate general radiographic/fluoroscopic equipment and related technology.

  • Demonstrated competency in the performance of general radiographic/fluoroscopy imaging studies.

  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific needs of patients.

  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.

  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for general radiographic/fluoroscopic imaging studies.

  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.

  • Ability to consistently procedure quality images of various anatomical structures.
