Job Description:

We are seeking a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O) data subject-matter expert to guide and validate the data workstream on an advisory analytics engagement. This is an advisory validation role for a senior F&O data SME with deep fluency in how F&O stores and structures financial and operational data, its tables, data entities, and helps identify the data that will flow into the data layer that feeds Power BI.

Your core value is answering the question"where does this data live in F&O?"and then validating that the right source data has been captured and correctly reconciled from source to report. You will partner closely with the Data & BI Lead. You "ride shotgun" on the F&O source-system perspective while they own the data engineering and Power BI model. Neither role alone covers the full scope.

Engagement Context

  • Microsoft stack. The client runs Dynamics 365 F&O as the ERP, with source data currently compiled in Azure Synapse and reporting delivered in Power BI.

  • Advisory, not implementation. The engagement is an assessment across two phases:Engage(current-state discovery) andEnvision(future-state analytics model). It does not include changes to F&O or Synapse.

  • Finance-first lens.A consistent requirement is that the analytics model must reflect the ERP and financial point of view, so F&O and accounting fluency both matters.

  • Central problem to solve.Define and support a reliable way to trace and reconcile source-to-report discrepancies (for example, a value visible in F&O but not yet reflected in the source extract or the model).

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the authority on the F&O data model

Map where financial and operational data physically lives across F&O tables and data entities, including:

  • General ledger

  • AR/AP subledgers

  • Inventory and costing

  • Fixed assets

  • Financial dimensions

  • Answer "where does X data live?"

Translate a business figure (a GL balance, an AR aging, a posted invoice) to the specific F&O tables/entities and fields that source it, for example:

  • GeneralJournalAccountEntry/GeneralJournalEntryfor GL

  • CustTrans/VendTransfor subledgers

  • InventTransfor inventory

  • DimensionAttributeValueCombinationstructures for financial dimensions

  • Guide source-dependent transformation

Call out F&O-specific pitfalls the data engineering team must account for, including:

  • Financial-dimension storage

  • Legal-entity (DataAreaId) partitioning

  • Posted vs. subledger vs. GL views

  • Effective-dated and settlement tables

  • Validate the extracted data is correct

Review the Synapse/data-lake extract (Export to Data Lake, Synapse Link for Dynamics 365, BYOD, or Data Management Framework entities) against F&O to confirm the right tables, grain, and completeness.

  • Own the reconciliation approach

Trace values from F&O through Synapse into the Power BI model and explain discrepancies so the resulting model ties back to the ERP and financial reality.

  • Support tie-outs

Reconcile the model to F&O standard reports and financial statements (trial balance, subledger agings) to confirm the model reflects the financial point of view.

  • Contribute to workshops and documentation

Participate in discovery and envisioning sessions, document data-lineage findings, and help validate scope with stakeholders.

  • Required Qualifications

  • Deep, hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O), including its Dynamics AX heritage, and a strong command of its table and data-entity schema.

  • Proven ability to locate and explain where specific financial and operational data resides in F&O (GL, AR/AP, inventory/costing, fixed assets, financial dimensions, and master data).

  • Working knowledge of F&O data extraction to Azure:

    • Export to Data Lake

    • Synapse Link for Dynamics 365

    • BYOD

    • Data Management Framework (DMF) data entities

  • Solid grounding in accounting and F&O financial processes, including:

    • Chart of accounts

    • Financial dimensions

    • Posting

    • Period close

  • Demonstrated experience validating and reconciling ERP source data to downstream reporting and analytics (source-to-report tie-outs).

  • Ability to partner closely with a Data/BI Engineering Lead and communicate schema and lineage clearly to both technical and business audiences.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or equivalent accounting/finance credential; a finance-first perspective on data modeling.

  • Working familiarity with Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, SQL Server, Power BI, and Microsoft data-platform concepts sufficient to advise on F&O source-data lineage and reporting implications.

  • Prior exposure to F&O implementations, upgrades, or data migration programs, with emphasis on understanding the resulting data structures and reporting impacts.

  • Prior consulting or advisory delivery under tight timelines.

  • Understanding of data governance concepts including ownership, access, lineage, and master data.

  • How You'll Work

    • You will work remotely alongside the Data & BI Lead, joining discovery and envisioning workshops and reconciliation working sessions.

    • The engagement is delivered as a collaborative pairing:

      • Youprovide the F&O source-system and financial interpretation.

      • The Data & BI Leadbuilds and validates the analytics model against it.

      • Together, you ensure that the analytics platform aligns with both the technical architecture and the financial reality of the ERP.
