What to Expect

Tesla's Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) team is looking for an Industrial Hygienist to support construction activities across Tesla's North American sites. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining industrial hygiene programs specific to construction operations. You will serve as the subject matter expert for construction industrial hygiene, partnering with project management, contractor safety teams and EHS leadership to build a proactive occupational health program that protects workers and supports Tesla's mission.

This role is based in Austin, TX with up to 30% travel requirements supporting construction sites across North America.


What You'll Do
  • Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive Construction Industrial Hygiene Program covering all phases of construction including demolition, site preparation, structural work, mechanical/electrical/plumbing and commissioning
  • Review and audit contractor scopes of work, health & safety plans and Exposure Control Plans for adequate IH controls prior to work commencing and conduct field audits to verify adherence
  • Design and execute qualitative and quantitative exposure monitoring programs for chemical, physical and biological agents; interpret results against applicable OELs (OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs and NIOSH RELs)
  • Manage core IH compliance programs including Respirable Crystalline Silica Exposure Control (29 CFR 1926.1153), Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Lead in Construction (29 CFR 1926.62), Hazard Communication/GHS and Heat Illness Prevention
  • Build and maintain a centralized IH exposure database in Cority capturing sampling results and control effectiveness data across multiple Tesla construction sites; develop Similar Exposure Groups and a Construction IH Exposure Library to enable cross-site trending and benchmarking
  • Leverage historical sampling data and exposure profiles to conduct pre-risk assessments for new construction projects, anticipating hazard levels and prescribing controls based on documented outcomes from comparable operations across Tesla sites
  • Develop and deliver IH-related training for Tesla project teams; manage IH data and technical reporting to support incident investigations, corrective actions and regulatory inquiries

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential required
  • 5+ years of progressive industrial hygiene experience with a minimum of 3 years supporting construction or capital project environments
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926), ACGIH TLVs and NIOSH guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience with silica exposure control, lead-in-construction programs, respiratory protection and contractor health & safety plan review
  • Proficiency with IH instrumentation (air sampling pumps, direct-read instruments, noise dosimeters and heat stress monitors) and Cority or equivalent IH data management systems
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred; excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical findings into actionable recommendations
