Position Summary The Production Planner/Buyer is responsible for supporting manufacturing execution through hands-on production planning, shop floor scheduling, material coordination, and procurement activities. While the role includes buying responsibilities, the primary emphasis is on developing, maintaining, and adjusting production plans to support customer delivery, efficient material flow, and effective use of manufacturing capacity. This position requires a strong understanding of shop floor operations, production flow, material availability, supplier lead times, capacity constraints, and manufacturing priorities. The successful candidate must be able to manually evaluate demand, shortages, work order status, and production constraints to create realistic and executable schedules, rather than relying solely on system-generated planning recommendations. Responsibilities Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develops and maintains manual production schedules based on customer requirements, material availability, labor and machine capacity, production flow, and shop floor conditions.
- Reviews demand, backlog, open orders, work orders, and inventory levels to determine production priorities and schedule requirements.
- Plans, schedules, and manages production capacity loads to support maximum on-time delivery and efficient use of manufacturing resources.
- Purchasing parts, materials, equipment, and services required to support production schedules and customer demand.
- Works closely with shop floor leadership to understand production status, constraints, bottlenecks, labor availability, and equipment capacity.
- Monitors production execution against the schedule and adjusts plans as needed to address changing priorities, delays, shortages, quality issues, or capacity limitations.
- Maintains visibility of materials through the production cycle and ensures production teams have the information needed to execute the schedule.
- Partners with purchasing and materials teams to identify shortages, expedite critical components, and align material availability with production requirements.
- Balancing production planning needs with inventory turns, freight cost, lead time, supplier performance, and customer delivery requirements.
- Communicates schedule changes, production risks, and delivery impacts to appropriate internal stakeholders.
- Assists in the execution of system transactions required to support work order release, material movement, production reporting, inventory accuracy, and order completion.
- Evaluates production priorities daily and makes sound planning decisions based on available information, business needs, and shop floor realities.
- Supports inventory objectives by helping balance material availability, production flow, customer demand, and inventory levels.
- Participates in daily production meetings, shortage reviews, capacity discussions, and cross-functional planning activities.
- Identifies opportunities to improve scheduling accuracy, production flow, lead time, inventory turns, and on-time delivery.
- Participates in continuous improvement activities and provides recommendations for cost reduction, planning efficiency, and manufacturing process improvement.
- Supports compliance with applicable federal, state, aerospace, and company requirements, including Government/Commercial Practices Manual policies and procedures, as applicable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree REQUIRED in Supply Chain Management or a related discipline preferred
- Minimum of three years of experience in production planning, materials planning, scheduling, or a similar manufacturing planning role.
- Experience working directly with a manufacturing shop floor, including interaction with production supervisors, operators, material handlers, quality, engineering, and purchasing.
- Strong understanding of hands-on production planning, material flow, work order management, capacity planning, inventory control, and manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manually evaluate demand, capacity, shortages, priorities, and production constraints to create executable schedules.
- Ability to plan effectively without relying solely on automated system recommendations or ERP-generated planning signal
- Experience and/or exposure to supply chain concepts and methodologies, and manufacturing through internships or training programs.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills for effective interface with all internal and external contacts.
