The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCl)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Center's mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training, and outreach. The business office of the Center currently employs 44 accounting staff members, the largest centralized unit of this kind in the School of Medicine. In addition to the contracts and grants funding which was $97.5 million in FY21, the Center manages the University Cancer Research Fund ( UCRF) of $58.1 million in FY21, an annual state budget of $1.6 million, a fundraising unit with annual expenses of over $6.1 million in FY21, $10 million in recharge revenues with are generated from the Center's Core facilities, $3.9 million in overhead receipts each year, and additional funds in trusts, endowments, and professorship accounts. At the close of fiscal year 2021, the Center's total operating budget was over $173.2 million.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is a financially and administratively complex component of the School of Medicine with LCCC accounting for 9% of all UNC-CH extramural funding. The Center also manages over 20 Core Facilities and over 250 Med Foundation accounts in addition to multiple trusts and professorships. Also, using UCRF funds, the Center initiates~ recruitment for new faculty. The Center identifies collaborating departments and completes all necessary documentation to formalize the appointments. Once the faculty member is at UNC, the Center must coordinate with these multiple departments on all faculty matters from activities and responsibilities to grant support, salary, and promotion.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position to help Lineberger manage its donor gift accounts of approximately $65+ million in expendable funds and $100+ million in endowment funds. These funds are used for cancer research basic science, translation science, clinical care, and patient financial support. This position is important to the mission of Lineberger to help in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. The Accounting Technician is responsible for the full range of accounting functions for approximately 100 Medical Foundation trust accounts as well as some departmental accounts. Responsibilities include account reconciliations, accounts payable, check deposits, budget transfers, check requests, travel reimbursements, purchasing card reconciliations and management of flow through payroll and expense accounts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Management Preferences

  • Demonstrated experience with monitoring and managing financial accounts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards and regulations and/or program laws and regulations.
  • Ability to justify and defend financial information.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve financial problems of considerable complexity requiring research, analysis, and implementation of change.
  • Knowledge of University systems and procedures.
