Job Description

Join the team that will define how the next-generation battleship is powered and operated.

We are seeking a Principal Project Manager to help bring a proven nuclear propulsion plant design into a new, first-of-a-kind battleship (BBGN). The Project Manager will sit at the center of one of the most visible, high-impact efforts in the Program, coordinating work across NNL, BPMI, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Naval Reactors. The project is expected to consume a peak of 200 NNL staff per year and will require strong coordination of efforts to ensure the required deliverables will be completed on time. The work will span several disciplines at NNL including Reactor Safety, Instrument and Control, and Plant Operations. Delivering a design to the Navy to support the start of construction in 2031 will require strong oversight of project deliverables. This Project Manager will be responsible for establishing and tracking metrics to ensure project health and support line management.

The successful candidate will:

  • Create project planning documents and metrics to scope and track progress of the BBGN effort.
  • Work with management, BPMI, NNS, and Carrier and Fleet Project to document WBS elements, planning assumptions, and schedule.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders within NNL and outside organizations to manage the Project Management Plan. Track metrics and ensure communication of key information across stakeholders.
  • Communicate progress to plan to management and Naval Reactors. Establish and maintain key routine meetings between organizations.
  • Track lessons learned, lead post-job assessments, and ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Monitor the allocation of BBGN resources in coordination with Carrier Fleet Programs.

This role is a good fit if you enjoy early design influence and working across organizational and technical boundaries to bring a complex ship concept to life.
