Summary:

Reporting to the Test Engineering Manager the Engineering Technician II will support the Base Engine, Test, and Engineering teams in the development and execution of test programs. Engineering Technician II is responsible for the preparation and installation of the test articles, operating test equipment and facilitating data collection associated with engine development, engine validation, and component testing. Responsibilities include instrumenting, installing, operating, and testing engines in a laboratory environment; performing base engine teardown and assembly; using precision tools to measure engine components; conducting first-level data reviews; and utilizing established tools to develop charts and graphs that effectively communicate results to internal customers.



Essential Responsibilities:



  • Setup and instrumentation of the test article.
  • Fabrication of test fixtures, mounting and adapting hardware, and fluid systems.
  • Installation of test articles (engines and components) onto test stands.
  • Installation, maintenance, and calibration of testing equipment.
  • Installation and maintenance of facility equipment.
  • Interface with PCs and data acquisition systems to tailor the data acquisition system for specific tests.
  • Assist in standardizing testing methods and establishing best practices including developing guidelines to document department test procedures.
  • Streamline test set up and overall workflow through the lab by the standardization of test fixtures.
  • Assist in maintaining testing equipment and perform schedule maintenance of testing equipment.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoot engine, electrical, and test cell instrumentation.
  • Perform engine maintenance, engine teardown, inspection, and basic engine measurements.
  • Perform research into new technologies that will improve the department's capability and efficiency.
  • Submit timely and concise test reports including test set up, testing methods and data summary.
  • Participating as needed in product development activities, such as pretest meetings and After-Action Reviews and developing and updating test procedures.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to investigate product/manufacturing process issues and assist in developing robust solutions.
  • Other task assigned by management.



Requirements:



  • Two-year technical degree in automotive technology or a related field. Applicants without a technical degree may be considered if exhibiting extensive and specific relevant work experience.
  • ASE or other similar certifications preferred.
  • 3 plus years of directly relevant work experience in engine development and/or automotive testing.



Qualifications:



  • Sound understanding of internal combustion theory and mechanics. Able to perform base engine teardown and assembly. Utilize precision measurement tools under the guidance of Senior Technician.
  • Fundamental understanding and experience with electronic control systems and DC electrical systems, capable of reading and interpreting electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of and experience with engine dynamometer testing equipment systems and base understanding of engine calibration methods.
  • Professional representation with focus on customer service.
  • Base level capability of metal fabrication including experience with machine tools such as mills and lathes preferred.
  • Base level experience with mig, tig, and acetylene welding of steel and stainless steel.
  • Motivated, self-sufficient, technically diverse, and easily adaptable, able to operate in a challenging, fast-paced, team environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills, with the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with internal customers.
  • Solid mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and functions.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required. Experience with testing automation software and interfacing with data acquisition systems is preferred.
  • Strong organizational, coordination, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take ownership of the testing process, the test lab and to continually focus on process improvement and increased efficiency.
