About this Role - Director of Safety

We are looking for a talented Director of Safety that has a passion for quality construction. This position is responsible for providing company-wide leadership, strategic direction, and technical expertise for M. J. Electric's comprehensive safety and health program in support of utility and electrical construction operations. The Director leads and supports the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of MJE's occupational safety, health, and environmental management system and translates the company's safety vision into actionable direction for every region and division.

What You'll Do

- Develop, champion, and execute MJE's enterprise safety vision, annual safety plan, and multi-year strategy, translating executive priorities into clear, measurable direction for every region and division while advancing a proactive, interdependent safety culture grounded in trust, worker engagement, stop-work authority, just-culture principles, and The Capacity Model / Human & Organizational Performance.

- Lead the design, documentation, and continual improvement of MJE's occupational health, safety, and environmental management system including corporate policies, programs, forms, apps, and resources, and direct their rollout and adoption across all regions and divisions.

- Company-wide compliance with OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and EPA requirements and applicable consensus standards (NFPA 70E, NESC, ANSI); monitor and interpret regulatory change; and ensure accurate OSHA recordkeeping, reporting, and required postings across all divisions.

- Support the investigation and classification of serious, high-energy, and Serious Injury & Fatality, potential events; direct a consistent root-cause process and ensure corrective and preventive actions are tracked to closure to measurably reduce recurrence.

- Establish and monitor leading and lagging indicators (potential exposure, assessments, observations, and good catches) and report performance trends and improvement plans to executive leadership.

- Establish enterprise training requirements and quality standards, oversee content and delivery (new-hire orientation, ET&D 10/20, competency/proficiency evaluations, e-learning); and lead the integration of The Capacity Model across the company.

- Establish and oversee the training requirements, quality standards, content and delivery (for new and existing safety personnel)

- Establish and support company-wide subcontractor onboarding plan.

- Direct the company-wide program for Job Site Safety Assessments, Safe Project Plans, pre-job planning, and high-energy hazard controls, and conduct independent and joint site visits that verify compliance and coach beyond compliance toward culture and human performance.

- Represent MJE's safety, health, and environmental programs in customer prequalification and audits, oversee subcontractor safety vetting; and build effective relationships with customers, subcontractors, local IBEW union safety/training personnel, and Quanta corporate safety.

- Oversee the safety-related material, training, and processes supporting disaster, emergency, and storm-restoration work, and confirm and coordinate appropriate safety coverage for crews responding to events, including cross-region deployment.

- Lead, coach, and develop the Corporate Safety & Health team and provide functional guidance to regional Managers of Safety & Health - including recruitment, performance management, and succession planning - while responsibly stewarding the safety budget and directing resources to areas of greatest risk and business need.

What You'll Bring

- Ability to engage and consult with all levels of management; to establish working relationships and partnerships at all levels of the organization

- Experience in developing and delivering safety training and development programs

- Awareness of Electrical Transmission & Distribution (ET&D) Partnership best practices and NECA safety resources relevant to utility contractor operations and client expectations

- High presence on jobsites; turning incident response into coaching and learning

- Ability to analyze complex information and formulate decisions.

- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and presentation skills

- Ability to provide oversight to numerous training and development initiatives

- Hands on experience designing and governing safety management systems

- Build, coach, and retain a high-performing safety organization.

- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction Management, Education, Software Engineering

- Extensive (12+) years of progressive experience in safety training and development with an emphasis on innovation and strategy

- CSP, CUSP, CHST, or comparable certifications relevant to utility construction safety preferred

Work Environment

- Regular visits to project sites; travel 40-60%.

- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc

- Continuously operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, scanner, and computer printer

- The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and coworkers and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations

- Occasionally lifting 20 pounds
