Position Summary
The Float Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection while supporting laboratory operations across multiple locations. The position also involves troubleshooting, maintaining accurate documentation, supporting workflow improvements, and assisting with training as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Collect, label, process, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to established procedures.
Accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes.
Verify test requisitions and computer-generated labels against physician orders/scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients.
Collect and properly handle other specimens, including urine and fecal specimens, as required.
Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and in the correct collection containers/tubes.
Package specimens appropriately for transportation while maintaining specimen integrity.
Update and verify patient information and maintain accurate records.
Record equipment/maintenance data and perform required decontamination procedures.
Troubleshoot collection or processing issues and make recommendations to improve workflow.
Understand and follow physician orders and laboratory protocols.
Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory-related information within the scope of the role.
Follow OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety procedures.
Attend required annual department training and maintain compliance with departmental policies.
Float between assigned laboratory locations based on business needs.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum 6 months of recent venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory, hospital, or clinical setting.
Valid Phlebotomy Certification, where required by the state.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong specimen handling, labeling, and processing skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability and willingness to travel/float between Asheville, Hendersonville, and Clyde locations.
