UTS- Temporary Web Designer at UNC Chapel Hill

The department is seeking a Web Designer/Web Developer to help complete and launch a new office website built in WordPress. The overall design and structure of the site are largely established, and the selected candidate will focus primarily on completing development, implementing remaining content and design updates, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the site is ready for launch.

The position will work primarily with WordPress and will require a strong understanding of front-end web development, including HTML and CSS. The candidate will work with OIRPA staff to address outstanding website needs, make updates within WordPress, and help ensure the site provides a consistent, user-friendly, and accessible experience. The role may also involve working with Markdown and other markup languages as part of the website development and publishing process.

4 year degree in a related field, related proven experience with web design

Strong experience with WordPress website design and development is required, including the ability to create, modify, format, and maintain WordPress websites. Candidates should have working knowledge of HTML and CSS and be comfortable making changes directly within a web development environment. Familiarity with the Gutenberg block editor, WordPress themes, and plugins is helpful.

Candidates should have familiarity with digital accessibility guidelines, including W3C standards and WCAG 2.1 guidelines, and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Effective communication and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals with varying levels of technical experience are also important.

Additional technical skills that would be beneficial include familiarity with Markdown and Git-based version control systems such as GitHub or GitLab, Pandoc or other file-conversion tools, and command-line environments. Experience with APIs and at least one programming language, such as Python or JavaScript, is also helpful. A willingness to continuously learn and apply new technologies and methodologies is expected.
