What will you do as an Electrical Controls & Sustaining Senior Engineer at Sealed Air?

As an Electrical Controls & Sustaining Senior Engineer, you will serve as the electrical controls engineering owner for assigned Vertical Pouch Packaging (VPP) equipment throughout its lifecycle, from commercialization through sustaining support and end-of-service-life.

You will design, develop, troubleshoot, and improve electrical control systems for VPP equipment, with a strong focus on industrial controls, machine troubleshooting, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement. You will work hands-on with PLCs, HMIs, servo systems, VFDs, motion control, sensors, and other machine control technologies.

You will partner with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Technical Service, Product Management, Sales, and suppliers to resolve complex equipment issues, support commercialization of new equipment, and improve the reliability, serviceability, safety, and long-term performance of VPP platforms.

Why do we need you?

  • Own the electrical controls engineering lifecycle for assigned VPP equipment platforms and provide technical direction from commercialization through sustaining support.
  • Design, modify, debug, and maintain PLC, HMI, servo, VFD, and motion control systems for new and existing VPP equipment.
  • Investigate complex electrical and controls-related equipment issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement practical corrective actions that minimize customer downtime.
  • Support machine testing, commissioning, field validation, customer equipment evaluations, and engineering investigations.
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, BOMs, engineering documentation, and equipment configuration records.
  • Lead Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), component replacements, obsolescence activities, and other lifecycle engineering changes.
  • Use controller logic, fault history, equipment performance data, service records, drawings, remote connectivity, and field information to diagnose complex machine issues.
  • Provide advanced technical support to Technical Service Representatives and field personnel and communicate field lessons learned to engineering teams.
  • Drive reliability improvement, component standardization, design simplification, commonization, and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and suppliers to improve equipment manufacturability, serviceability, safety, and long-term supportability.

What skills will help you succeed?

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent technical background and experience.
  • Approximately 5-7 years of professional experience designing, troubleshooting, and supporting industrial automation, electrical controls, or automated machinery.
  • Strong hands-on experience with industrial controls, particularly PLCs, HMIs, drives, motion control, and servo systems.
  • Experience programming, debugging, and troubleshooting industrial control systems in real-world manufacturing or equipment environments.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or comparable control platforms.
  • Experience reading and developing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working directly with automated equipment in a manufacturing or plant environment; customer-site experience is also valuable.
  • Experience with packaging equipment or food packaging is highly valued, but experience with other automated machinery, conveyors, material handling, or similar equipment will also be considered.
  • Working knowledge of machine safety and applicable electrical standards such as NEC, NFPA 79, UL, and CE.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively with engineering, manufacturing, technical service, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across functions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20%, including occasional overnight, domestic, and international travel.
  • Experience with VPP, form-fill-seal, flexible-film packaging, or other high-speed packaging equipment is a plus.
