THE POSITION

Do you want a role where your mechanical knowledge helps keep a facility operating smoothly? As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator with the Department of Corrections, you will maintain boiler plant equipment and guide inmate workers in safe processes at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position performs and oversees boiler plant operations to ensure equipment runs safely and efficiently. You will maintain systems, supervise inmate workers, and support both routine and emergency conditions. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boiler Operation: Operate and maintain boiler equipment under normal and emergency conditions
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine and non-routine inspections, cleaning, and minor repairs
  • Auxiliary Systems: Run and maintain pumps, fans, control equipment, and related systems
  • Water Testing: Test boiler water chemistry and track chemical inventory and results
  • Work Crew Oversight: Supervise inmate workers, monitor movement, and ensure safe work practices
  • Documentation Tasks: Complete daily logs, inventories, and required paperwork

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work hours are 2nd shift (3:00 PM to 11:00 PM) and 3rd shift (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM), with rotating days off. The schedule rotates so that you will have every other weekend off and every other Thursday and Friday off.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,010.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
