The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that will begin on August 23, 2027. This is a full-time, 9-month position.

Structural Engineering: Targeted areas of expertise include, but are not limited to advanced structural analysis, modeling, and design, infrastructure resiliency, structural testing, and topics that complement ongoing departmental research.

The successful candidates will establish independent, externally funded research programs that include mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will teach core structural engineering courses as well as advanced structural analysis and design courses that support both the Civil Engineering B.S. and M.S. programs. The Department's Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program that includes mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates are expected to provide service to the Department, College, and University while supporting community and belonging; we welcome candidates who seek to incorporate elements of sustainability, resiliency, and equity into their courses and research. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UMD encourages interdisciplinary research and teaching activities and collaborations. State-of-the-art facilities in the department include an extensive structures laboratory with a strong floor and reaction wall for large-scale testing. Startup funding is available. Opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty across the UMD campus and with scientists and engineers at the Natural Resources Research Institute, the Large Lakes Observatory, local, state, and federal agencies. Faculty members advise graduate students in the Civil Engineering M.S. Program and are eligible for appointments in other graduate programs in the University of Minnesota system. Additionally, faculty members may advise Ph.D. students in the Molecular and Materials Science and Engineering, Water Resources Science, and Integrated Biosciences Graduate Programs, or through appointments on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree from a regionally accredited university in Civil Engineering or a closely related field by July 1, 2027
  • Effective written communication skills appropriate to the position;
  • Experience in using technology for teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or professional experience in a relevant field;
  • Demonstrated research productivity and experience writing and managing grants;
  • Experience teaching a variety of upper and lower division courses such as those offered by UMD;
  • Effective teaching and communication skills appropriate to the position;
  • Demonstrated experience with assessment;
  • Evidence of the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $77,224 - $90,269 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
