About the Job

Teaching Specialist, Applied Business

This part-time teaching position is responsible for University of Minnesota course instruction in Applied Business courses (ABUS) contracted by Undergraduate Applied and Professional Studies (uAPS) in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS). The position includes requirements for teaching (primarily online), making course curriculum updates, supporting program initiatives, participating in professional development, and/or course development as needed.

Teaching Specialists in Applied Business report to the Faculty Director for Applied Business and are typically contracted on a semester basis to teach at least one course per academic year.

We are looking for professionals with content expertise in any of the following: accounting and finance; career search; communication; decision-making and problem-solving; digital design; diversity and inclusivity; facility management; grant writing; human resources; innovation; law and ethics; leadership; management in organizations; marketing; product development; project management; quality management; real estate; small business; sustainability.

This position offers a flexible work arrangement as a hybrid position and has the unique opportunity to help shape and be responsible for the student experience.

The search committee will review applications as program needs arise throughout the year. Candidates will only be contacted when there is a course available.

  1. If contracted to teach the contracted class section(s): fulfilling University policies and using course-appropriate effective practices: setting high expectations; supporting achievement with clear instructions, examples, and samples; establishing frequent, regular contact with students; grading and returning coursework promptly with relevant formative and/or summative feedback; engaging students in relevant collaborative work; and submitting final grades on time.
  2. Revise course or provide input as appropriate to stay abreast of business practices and trends and to support changes in the disciplinary goals and curricula.
  3. Stay current in the discipline and participate in activities to support professional development, faculty community dialogue, self-assessment, and teaching reviews.
  4. Hold weekly office hours that are reasonably responsive to student schedules.
  5. Work with program staff as needed to resolve course- or student-related situations that require support or resources outside the classroom.
Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • A demonstrated skill & commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Bachelor's degree in a field closely related to the course(s) of instruction.
  • Ten or more years of professional experience in a field/knowledge area directly related to the course(s) of instruction.
  • One year of teaching or corporate training experience.

PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree in a field closely related to the course(s) of instruction.
  • Teaching experience in higher education.
  • Leadership experience in a business organization.

DESIRED

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in a field closely related to the course(s) of instruction or in adult higher education.
  • Teaching experience in higher education at the undergraduate level including online courses.
  • A demonstrated understanding of pedagogy that blends theoretical concepts and professional applications.

Pay and Benefits

The salary for all new instructors (Teaching Specialists) is $2,437 per credit.
