The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Dell Medical School is seeking a Pediatric Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical care as part of the comprehensive pediatric mental health team at Dell Children's Medical Center.

Purpose

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, the provider will work in an inpatient mental health unit to provide medication evaluation and management to children and adolescents with mental illness, working collaboratively with the psychiatrist to provide patient assessment and diagnosis, formulate treatment plans, prescribe medications, order laboratory tests, interpret test results, provide patient education, prepare medical records in accordance with statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession.

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with an inter-disciplinary team of physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and behavioral health technicians on the inpatient mental health unit (MHU) to care for children and adolescents.

  • Conducts comprehensive clinical assessments for the purpose of diagnosing and providing ongoing treatment of psychiatric disorders, inclusive of obtaining a detailed medical and psychiatric history through interviews, clinical record, and psychiatric interview. Orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic studies. Obtains history from and collaborates care with patient's families and care team, including outpatient psychiatric providers and primary care providers. Provides evidenced-based treatment and psychoeducation to patients and families.

  • Participates in quality improvement and initiatives that analyze professional practice, outcomes and efficiencies, including peer review, chart review, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Completes documentation in the clinical record related to interaction with individuals served, families and other service providers in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with professional ethics and with both Federal and State regulations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse-Psychiatric Mental Health in the State of Texas and in good standing. Graduate of licensed and accredited nursing school. Master's degree. Eligible for credentialing and privileging by UT Health Austin and Ascension Texas. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Outstanding organizational and time-management skills. Ability to address individuals and information with a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality in various delicate, formal, or urgent situations. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, staff, and patients. Must be comfortable and flexible with changing priorities and self-directed problem solving.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

One (1) or more year of experience in a pediatric psychiatric clinical practice. Experience delivering care through a multidisciplinary team. Proficiency using Cerner and Athena electronic medical records. Experience tracking, measuring, and using patient reported outcomes in developing treatment plans for patients. Bilingual in Spanish.

Salary Range

$120,000+ depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
