DESCRIPTION

The Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health seeks an experienced Health Innovation Grants and Development Officer to lead our efforts in securing funding through grants, philanthropic efforts, and business development opportunities. This role requires a professional with a deep understanding of the healthcare innovation field, capable of independently performing a wide range of responsibilities from conceptualization to execution of funding strategies. The successful candidate will possess a robust knowledge base, exceptional analytical skills, and the creativity to navigate and secure diverse funding sources for health innovation projects.

Examples of organizations we would submit grants to are:

Federal Agencies: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Commerce (DOC, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

State Agencies: California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)

Private Organizations: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), The Ford Foundation

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive funding strategies, including grant applications, philanthropic outreach, and business development efforts, to support the Jacobs Center's health innovation initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and resource for all assigned grant programs and initiatives within the realm of health innovation.
  • Collaborate with major program stakeholders, including research institutions, scientists, industry professionals, and legislators, to develop innovative and cost-effective strategies for project evaluation and funding.
  • Conduct thorough analyses to identify research priorities and opportunities for funding within the scope of the center's objectives and the broader landscape of health innovation.
  • Craft and disseminate compelling content for communications with various stakeholders, including research institutions, professionals, legislators, media, and the public, to promote the center's initiatives and funding needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of grant awards and other funding efforts, ensuring alignment with the center's goals and compliance with funding requirements.
  • Foster strong relationships with external partners, donors, and funding agencies to secure ongoing and new funding opportunities for health innovation projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Extensive Experience in Grant Writing and Management: Demonstrated track record of securing funding from federal, state, and private organizations, with a proven ability to manage the full lifecycle of grant applications.

  • Working with Grant Administration: Proven ability to collaborate with grant administration teams to plan and strategize on submissions prior to submission, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and funding requirements.

  • Experience with Academic Medical Centers: Significant experience in achieving grant success with academic medical centers, including understanding their unique challenges and opportunities.

  • Proactive in Identifying Grant Opportunities: Consistently follows new grant opportunities and trends in successful submissions, staying informed about emerging funding sources and strategies.

  • Multifaceted Grant Submissions: Experienced in submitting grants across multiple faculty and multiple organizations, especially involving collaborations between academic institutions and private companies.

  • Exceptional Analytical and Strategic Thinking Skills: Ability to conduct thorough analyses to identify funding opportunities and develop strategic plans to secure grants and other funding sources.

  • Strong Relationship-Building Abilities: Proven ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with external partners, donors, funding agencies, and major program stakeholders.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
