Job Summary The Financial Analyst - Decision Support applies extensive knowledge of industry practices in health care decision support and advanced professional concepts to substantial projects, typically at high degrees of complexity.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Support Financial Management of external partners helping to provide financial reporting, planning, and analysis to UCSF leadership and joint board. In supporting the finance leadership, closely collaborates with accounting to ensure timely and accurate reporting of monthly financial statements, supporting analysis, annual operating budgets, monthly and quarterly payments to the Partner, and board presentations.
- Supports Revenue Cycle, Contracting, and Physician Payment Teams to estimate and monitor performance per contract terms, budget, and organization (UCSF & Partner) expectations. Provides support in the resolution of variances collaborating with the joint board and advisory committees.
- Supports monthly preparation of partnership profit & loss statement including capture and recording of all partnership-related administrative services expenses to calculate all payments to the Partner. Supports reconciliation of draft payments with actual liability to partner to adjust payments as necessary.
- Assists with gathering data, calculating, analyzing, and publishing physician production data including Work Relative Value Units (wRVU), FTEs, and other metrics for physician productivity.
- Reporting and analyses. Create and publish physician payroll summaries for use by accounting to record professional service agreement (PSA) expenses.
- Calculate physician compensation and periodic bonuses of Foundation physicians based on agreements. Create and maintain accurate physician compensation financial calculations for each Medical Group physician using Excel spreadsheets or other tools.
- Maintain and improve scalable monthly reporting for internal business partners.
- Lead implementation of new financial systems and tools.
- Delivers complex financial and statistical information in the development of multi-year capital and operating budgets, including making recommendations to management to improve the budget-development process. Collaborates with key personnel across departments to explain variances and to identify and resolve financial or procedural problems.
- Develops or assists in developing complex financial proformas of physician compensation and benefits for new or established physician practices and ad hoc analyses.
- Uses broad experience and technical knowledge to propose solutions to complex business problems.
- Creates and/or develops new methods of analysis, database design, and performance measurement or, in some cases, adaptation of existing solutions to new areas.
- Performs modeling of data sources and flows, and works with data management staff to define an operational framework that will define, develop, and implement policies and security frameworks to ensure precise and secure delivery of knowledge and information.
- Prepare monthly variance analysis and commentary for leadership review.
- Supports leadership in ad-hoc analysis as necessary for partner collaboration.
The successful candidate will work closely with leadership, Joint Ventures & Affiliations, medical center and faculty practice finance teams, decision support professionals, department managers, and outside consultants. The candidate must be able to thrive and succeed in a changing environment and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. The candidate will anticipate bottlenecks and make trade-offs, and balance the business needs versus other priorities. The ability to take sparse information and successfully break down projects, initiatives, and strategic priorities is expected. Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent, and leadership are essential to success in the role.

Department Description UCSF Health's Office of Strategy and Health Affiliates is charged with leading and executing the strategic planning and business development for UCSF Health as well as facilitating the integration and alignment of the UCSF Health Affiliate Network. The strategy and affiliates team is highly collaborative and implements an engaging approach to improve UCSF Health's market position and top line revenue and bring to fruition the many joint ventures and alliances it has established in support of its strategic vision.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years of equivalent experience/training.
- Four or more years of successful increasingly demanding hands-on experience in a finance department(s) designing, implementing and delivering timely products and reports, AND two of the four years working in a healthcare environment.
- In-depth understanding of decision support systems, with knowledge of business statistics, quantitative methods, relational databases, business development scorecards, data modeling, and performance and profitability analysis.
- In-depth knowledge of issues and aspects of clinical finance, planning, financial data management, budget development, and business development. Proficiency in utilizing the tools to produce comprehensive, studies and actionable intelligence.
- Advanced organizational and project management skills, and ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
- Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead projects and teams and collaborate productively on highly complex projects with key personnel at all professional and technical levels.
- Advanced written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to interpret and convey highly sophisticated technical and financial information in a clear, concise manner, and to make cogent presentations of analyses, reports, and investigation results.
- Advanced problem-solving skills analytical ability, and in-depth knowledge of documentation and reporting, with the ability to run highly complex queries and studies, collect and analyze financial and performance data, and produce relevant, meaningful reports, analyses, and forecasts.
- In-depth ability to work with senior staff and managers across departments, serving as a technical leader and information resource in decision support, and providing recommendations and advice on decision support processes, business and financial issues, and industry trends and advances.
- The work location is hybrid and will require two (2) days a week in our Emeryville office and one (1) day a month in our Brisbane office for the first couple of months for training. Upon completion of training, one will be required to work up to one (1) day a week in Emeryville and one (1) a month in Brisbane, subject to change per UCSF policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Computer proficiency in multiple financial reporting, analytical, and business intelligence tools, SQL to write complex queries to access disparate data from Omni view/UCALL Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Fluency in Tableau, Essbase, and Cognos preferred
