The Clinical Ethicist provides consultative and educational services to patients, their families, and hospital staff on ethical concerns within the healthcare system. They perform a variety of clinical, consultative, educational and planning functions in support of the Northside Hospital Clinical Ethics Committee's Consultation Service. All duties are performed in accordance with best practice and in concert with policies, procedures, and guidelines. Reporting to NSH Director of Patient Care Administration and Chairpersons Ethics Committee, this position will support the Ethics Committee and Consultation Service serving Northside hospitals within the system. Independently performs ethics consultations, participates in the educational and organizational Ethics mission of the system and assists in the quality monitoring of the impact of ethics consultations. Assists with development and updating of institutional policies for compliance with health system policies, state, and federal law concerning ethical issues; works in concert with the Ethics Consultation Service leadership to meet the Joint Commission and other external accreditation agency requirements for a Clinical Ethics Consultation service.
REQUIRED
- CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
- Four (4) years of experience as Clinical Ethicist, Senior Clinical Ethicist, Clinical Ethics Consultant, Clinical Ethics Director, or similar in an acute care hospital/ hospital system in the US.
- LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
- Current License in the State of Georgia as a Registered Nurse or Nursing Compact (NLC/eNLC) or Multistate License
- Current certification as Healthcare Ethics Consultant - Certified (HEC-C) by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH)
- EDUCATION:
- Master's Degree or higher in nursing and Post Master's/Graduate Certificate in Bioethics from accredited University Program
PREFERRED
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in bioethics or clinical ethics.
- Certified or Registered Mediator
- Experience as an ethics service operational and clinical director/manager.
- Experience as clinical ethicist supporting emergent and complex consultation to high volume, high acuity obstetric and neonatal intensive care services.
- Experience as investigator in clinical trial for clinical ethics research.
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary leadership teams to create, implement and measure complex patient care service initiatives for an ethics service.
- Knowledge and experience in identifying quantitative and qualitative quality metrics and/or outcomes for clinical ethics programs.
- Knowledge and experience in the utilization of data entry, spreadsheet, database and statistical programs to capture and record ethics service work; experience creating data visualizations to describe ethics service volume and outcomes.
- Experience in public speaking; creating and delivering presentations to executive leadership.
- Experience in hiring, evaluating, and coaching direct reports (clinical ethicists).
- Experience in coordinating and creating internal stakeholder engagement campaigns to deliver specialized ethics education via digital platforms.
- Experience creating and sustaining a system-wide 'On-Call' schedule to provide 24/7/365 ethics service team coverage for multiple hospitals/locations.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Applications: Excel, Access.
- Experience in frontline clinical team interactions/meetings such as clinical rounding, care conferences, conflict resolution and/or mediation interventions, and moral distress de-briefings.
- Experience leading complex ethics case consultations of all age groups (neonates to elderly) that require specialized knowledge of regulatory state and federal law including civil rights laws, conscience and religious freedom laws, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, and the Patient Safety Act and Rule.
- Experience in Clinical Ethics curriculum development and program administration for Continuing Medical and other healthcare professional education (CME, CE, et al.); case presentations and other modalities.
- Experience in structured de-escalation and/or mediation skills for intractable clinical conflicts between patients/families and providers.
